We can now call Elon Musk and Grimes' baby "the child formerly known as "X Æ A-12 Musk."

The couple has changed the baby's name to "X Æ A-Xii," which appears to just replace the more commonly known "12" with its Roman numeral.

The baby, born May 5, is the first for the couple.

Musk has five other kids from a past marriage -- twins Griffin and Xavier and triplets Damian, Saxon and Kai, but the name "X Æ A-12 Musk," which was announced early this month, may be by far the family's strangest name.

After their baby was born, many speculated that Grimes and Musk's odd baby name didn't comply with California law. And they were right.

Matt Conens, of the Office of Public Affairs of the California Department of Public Health, wrote to USA Today, and said simply: "A name like 'X Æ A-12' would not be allowed," adding:

"Vital records must be completed with the 26 alphabetical characters of the English language and appropriate punctuation such as hyphens, apostrophes, periods, and commas."

Elon Musk and Grimes seem a happy couple.

On Sunday, someone on social media asked Grimes, "Did you change the baby name because of Californian laws ? What is the baby's new name?"

Grimes answered: "X Æ A-Xii," later saying, "Roman numerals. Looks better tbh."

She says the "A-12" part refers to a plane they both love:

"A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent," she said, adding that the "A" means "Archangel, while "X" stands for "the unknown variable."

Grimes responded on her Instagram.

There's even more to unpack in the name, according to CNN:

" 'Æ' is the Elven spelling of AI, which is shorthand for artificial intelligence and the word for "love" in several languages, including Japanese."

The couple can tweak the name whichever way they want, but it's still going to be a bizarre choice.

@JanepSpencer asked: "Any thought to how this name will affect this child as he grows up .... this will be a lifetime of ridicule. How does this kid get taken seriously? Apply for a job, introduce himself?"

@Boomersaurus tweeted: "X Æ A-Xii, Or just plain X to us monetarily and intellectually-challenged peons."

There's still time to change the baby's name again before he notices.

People also wanted to know how to even pronounce the baby's name, which is important information for everyone, including the baby.

Grimes wrote: "It's just X, like the letter X. Then A.I. Like how you said the letter A then I."

On a recent podcast with Joe Rogan, though, Musk said their baby's name was pronounced differently:

"I mean it's just X, the letter X. And then, the Æ is, like, pronounced 'Ash'... and then, A-12, A-12 is my contribution," he said.
