Gabrielle Union Opens Up About 'AGT' Meeting As NBC Announces Formal Investigation

By Whitney Vasquez

Gabrielle Union has given her followers some insight as to what went down with NBC executives during their meeting in regards to the hostile work environment at "America's Got Talent" and her being fired as judge after only one season. Taking to social media on Wednesday, Gabrielle addressed their long sitdown and said she led with complete transparency. She spoke out for the first time about the meeting just hours before news broke that NBC is opening a formal investigation and some say the target is Simon Cowell.

Speaking Out

Although Gabrielle Union didn't mention the further prompt into the reality competition series, she did address what took place behind closed doors on Tuesday. "We had a lengthy 5-hour, and what I thought to be, productive meeting yesterday," she began her tweet. "I was able to, again, express my unfiltered truth," Union continued. "I led with transparency and my desire and hope for real change." Her tweet comes nearly two weeks after Gabrielle Union, along with fellow female judge Julianne Hough, was axed after questioning "problematic situations" on set.

Formal Investigation:

According to Variety, NBC's meeting with Gabrielle Union prompted the network to launch a deeper investigation into the complaints of toxic culture on set. “The initial conversation was candid and productive. While there will be a further investigation to get a deeper understanding of the facts, we are working with Gabrielle to come to a positive resolution,” an NBC spokesperson told the outlet. Deadline is reporting that Simon Cowell's behavior was a huge portion of the discussions spoken about during Gabrielle's meeting with NBC. While they state that an independent investigator will be in charge of prioritizing what's next, a source tells the outlet, “The ball is in NBC’s court to see if they can get Cowell to agree to make some changes to the way things are done on the show."

Support Flows In:

Gabrielle Union spoke out for the first time regarding her departure last week by tweeting and thanking fans for their support. “So many tears, so much gratitude,” she wrote. “THANK YOU! Just when you feel lost, adrift, alone… you got me up off the ground. Humbled and thankful, forever.” While she kept mum on the details surrounding her departure, it didn't stop her NBA playing husband, Dwyane Wade, to sound off on the issue. Firing off a series of tweets, he fiercely defended his wife. "Men lie, Women lie, numbers don’t.’ Over this past year I’ve been approached by many people saying that my wife @itsgabrielleu is the main reason they’ve started watching #AGT or that they love her insight and sincerity on the show," he began his rant. “So when i got the news that my wife was being fired—my first question was obviously why!?” Wade continued. “I am still waiting on a good answer to that question. But if anyone knows @itsgabrielleu or have heard of her you know she’s an advocate for our community and culture.” Gabrielle Union's firing isn't just affecting herself and her husband, she recently revealed their one-year-old daughter, Kaavia James, has been mirroring Mommy's behavior lately.

Sharing several snaps of their child on her toy phone, Union said Kaavia's behavior right now "is a MOOD." Seemingly addressing the "AGT" controversy, Gabrielle Union coyly slammed her ex-bosses with her baby. "@kaaviajames has been here before and she was fed up then too," she wrote. "And clearly I've been on the phone too much lately 🥴... She has me down pat...including that lil hand!" she laughed. Then Gabrielle said the most powerful statement of all by adding, "And she's not gonna go along to get along either." Several strong female voices in the entertainment industry like Eva Longoria, Sharon Osbourne, and Ellen Pompeo have expressed support for Gabrielle Union.
