They're Finally Reuniting

Fans of Friends lost their minds on February 21st, when it was announced that the core cast of the iconic sitcom were reuniting for a special on the upcoming streaming app HBO Max. The cast members all dropped Instagram posts about it to get people hyped, and people were indeed hyped.

The reunion episode would not be a scripted check in on the beloved Central Perk crew, but it would feature all of the actors in conversation about the show on the original soundstage. Variety reported that the cast members would receive at least $2.5 million a piece for the special.

Production Is Delayed

However, in a stroke of bad luck, the production of the episode has been delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak. Entertainment Weekly reported that the special had been set to film on Monday and Tuesday of next week, but it had been pushed back due to "due to the current global pandemic and health concerns."

While the new production date has not been revealed, the special is still expected to air in May with the launch of HBO Max.

However, the entertainment industry is being thrown into a massive state of flux due to COVID-19, so at this point, anything could happen.

What To Expect From The Show

When the special does get to air, it's sure to be a massive nostalgia trip for fans of Friends. Kevin Reilly, chief content officer at HBO Max and president of TBS, TNT, and truTV, said in a statement:

"Guess you could call this the one where they all got back together — we are reuniting with David, Jennifer, Courteney, Matt, Lisa, and Matthew for an HBO Max special that will be programmed alongside the entire Friends library. I became aware of Friends when it was in the very early stages of development and then had the opportunity to work on the series many years later and have delighted in seeing it catch on with viewers generation after generation. It taps into an era when friends – and audiences – gathered together in real time and we think this reunion special will capture that spirit, uniting original and new fans."

What Courtney Cox Has To Say

Monica Geller herself, Courtney Cox, also talked about the special while she was a guest on comedian Kevin Nealon's YouTube series, Hiking With Kevin, explaining that it was great to be back at it with the old gang again.

"So the exciting thing is that we're all going to get together for the first time, in a room, and actually talk about the show.

We're going to have the best time. It's going to be great. We really haven't all done that and actually sat there and talked about and reminisced about this incredible experience that we had. … It's going be fantastic.

The ideal for me — we just actually recently did this, and it took forever. I don't know how many years it was, maybe 15 years? We finally all got together and had dinner. And when we get together, which is never — it only happened ... like twice since we ended the show — it's just the most fun."

Something to look forward to!
