Francis Ford Coppola Gets Trolled After Trashing Marvel Movies, James Gunn Responds

By Gary Trock

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has a new supervillain, and his name is Francis Ford Coppola.

The 80-year-old "Godfather" director is catching major heat after he ripped into the popularity of superhero movies while defending his friend, director Martin Scorsese.

"When Martin Scorsese says that the Marvel pictures are not cinema, he's right because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration," Coppola said to journalists Saturday at an event in the French city of Lyon.

Scorsese has been criticized for claiming Marvel movies are "not cinema," and Coppola doubled down.

"Martin was kind when he said it's not cinema. He didn't say it's despicable, which I just say it is," he stated.

Defenders of Iron Man and company immediately took to social media to rip Coppola and Scorsese for being out of touch.

Another person thought, regardless of his opinion, Coppola came across as a jerk for belittling the hard work of others in the entertainment industry.

James Gunn Sounds Off

Perhaps the heaviest hitter to respond to Scorsese and Coppola is none other than "Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn.

After hearing the comments from the "Godfather" director, Gunn finally clapped back in a lengthy Instagram post.

"Superheroes are simply today’s gangsters/cowboys/outer space adventurers. Some superhero films are awful, some are beautiful. Like westerns and gangster movies (and before that, just MOVIES), not everyone will be able to appreciate them, even some geniuses. And that’s okay."
