One of the longest unsolved puzzles around was just solved by a regular guy who knew he had the chops to crack the code.

The newest episode of Discovery's "Expedition Uknown" will feature explorer Josh Gates teaming up with a local Boston man to uncover one of the longest treasures he had been hunting.

Josh Krupat, a game designer, set out to find the buried treasures from late author Byron Preiss.

In Preiss' 1982 novel, "The Secret," he challenged readers to decipher clues in 12 paintings and 12 poems to discover the location of a dozen buried treasure boxes.

Each box contained a key that could be exchanged for a precious gemstone. Preiss died in a car accident back in 2005 and unfortunately took the answers to the grave.

Since his death, only two boxes had been found by treasure hunters.

After the discovery, Gates talked about the special moment.

"This has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I’ve spent years following this story and have received thousands of messages from passionate searchers all over the country who think they’ve cracked the case. For one of these elusive boxes to be buried in my hometown of Boston is such a thrill. We think of stories like this as fantasies, but it turns out some treasures are real, and buried right beneath our feet."

The season finalé of "Expedition Unknown" airs Wednesday, October 30 at 9 PM on Discovery.
