Songwriter Diane Warren Shocked After Katy Perry Loses 'Dark Horse' Trial: 'Yikes!'

By Gary Trock

Legendary songwriter Diane Warren believes the lawsuits against singers and songwriters is "out of hand," but has a simple solution on not getting sued.

62-year-old Warren was leaving dinner at Craig's in West Hollywood on Monday night when she was asked about Katy Perry's loss after the jury in her trial ruled that "Dark Horse" was a rip-off of a Christian song.

"Yikes ... I try not to copy other people's works," Warren said when told about the verdict, which was delivered hours earlier in an L.A. courtroom.

Warren explained that the litigation around music is "kinda crazy" these days, and that artists can even be sued for a "vibe" or "chord progression," which she explains there are only so many of.

While admitting that some of the lawsuits are getting out of hand, Warren's friend leaned over and made it clear, "Dianne doesn't need to copy anybody ... she's too good."

Warren, who has won a Grammy, Emmy and a Golden Globe, has famously written songs for many stars, including Whitney Houston, Britney Spears, Elton John and Celine Dion.

With all her success, Warren had a pretty good tip for not getting tangled up in any litigation over music, explaining, "I write by myself."

Nice humble brag.
