Bautista, whose Drax character has been a fan favorite in the first two “GotG” installments, made it clear he’ll reprise his role as he is legally obligated to, but he’s far from happy about it. The star tweeted on Sunday that “GotG” without James Gunn isn’t “What I signed up for,” adding “Its also pretty nauseating to work for someone who’d empower a smear campaign by fascists #cybernazis. That’s just how I feel.”
The former wrestler has been vocal about his disagreement with Disney over its decision to remove Gunn from the popular franchise after Gunn faced criticism for old tweets about a variety of offensive topics, including pedophilia and rape. Gunn apologized, clarifying he’s not the same person he was when he tweeted the nearly decade-old jokes.
Disney released a statement on the tweets, saying, “The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him.”
Since Disney’s decision, there has been a mass effort from both fans and the film’s stars to reinstate the director, including an open letter sign by the cast as well as a Change.org petition that is nearing 400,000 signatures.
