Britney Spears fans are calling for an end to her conservatorship just hours after Kanye West announced he will be running for president of the United States, and the reason is simple -- he was hospitalized for mental illness too!

On Sunday afternoon, the hashtag #freebritney started trending worldwide on Twitter after a group of the pop star's fans pushed for an end to her personal conservatorship which has lasted over a decade. More specifically, they are calling for the pop princess to have access to her own personal lawyer in the case.

One topic that bubbled up on Twitter was the fact that Kanye West, who is now running for President, was also hospitalized for mental illness and was involuntarily held for over a week.

As you know, Britney Spears has been under the conservatorship for over 10 years and some would say she has flourished under the circumstances including a successful Las Vegas residency continuing to release music.

But, members of the #freebritney movement claim she is unfairly being held against her will.

"Britney’s situation is truly horrible and is a violation of human rights. There’s no reason why she should continue to be under a conservatorship. She doesn’t even have control of her own finances or children," one tweet read.

Another added, "Britney Spears is one of the sweetest and most unproblematic celebrities out there, and she doesn't deserve this. pls spread the word about this, she deserves respect !!!! #FreeBritney."

In this case, many would point to Britney Spears' hospitalization and medical diagnosis as reasons for her to be under the conservatorship, including recently re-entering a facility for 30 days after needed to balance her medication.

But, in 2016 Kanye West was also hospitalized after suffering from 'temporary psychosis' and held involuntarily for eight days. At the time, Kanye 'hadn't slept in about a week' and was exhibiting 'aggressive and terrifying' outbursts, according to Rolling Stone.

The difference is that Kanye was treated and never put under any kind of conservatorship, and the #freebritney movement believes Britney should be given the same opportunity.

"The way this woman is the sweetest and kindest human that ever exists, but y’all still have a nerve to drag, hate and call her crazy for no reason. All she does is enjoy life. Instead of hating her, do something really nice and read about this situation. #FreeBritney," one person tweeted.

As we reported, several fans have pointed out they are worried about the pop princesses' mental health after watching some of the bizarre videos she posts on Instagram.

But, similarly, Kanye's situation hit a crucial point after he canceled part of his tour after rambling onstage monologues about Donald Trump and Beyonce.

After #freebritney starting trending, several fans posted court documents from 2008 outlining Britney's fathers reasoning for the conservatorship in the first place.

"Britney Spears’ father claimed she had DEMENTIA and was “unable to properly provide for herself”, to lock her in the conservatorship in 2008. A couple of months after this, that supposedly disabled woman was sent back to a rigorous work routine, including a world tour," one tweet read.

Adding, "February 2008: after claiming Britney Spears had dementia, she was placed in a conservatorship. -March 2009: Britney starts her Circus World Tour, where she dangles from the air and walks through fire rings. Normal activities for a dementia patient, right?"

In the end, several Britney fans shared a change.org petition calling for the courts to allow Britney to choose her own attorney for the conservatorship case.

"With this conservatorship, she is unable to properly fight for her freedom as she isn’t legally allowed to hire her own lawyer. We need this petition so that Britney can hire her own lawyer and live a normal life as a 38-year-old woman with two kids."

At this point, any movement in Britney's case will have to wait after a judge in Los Angeles County approved pushing back the next hearing in the case due to COVID-19.

So far, Britney has not commented or reacted to the situation.
