Brad Pitt Admits To Using Alcohol As An 'Escape' Before Getting Sober

By Whitney Vasquez

Brad Pitt is getting candid about his past struggles with alcohol, admitting he used booze as "an escape" before getting sober after his split with Angelina Jolie. During a conversation with fellow actor Anthony Hopkins for Interview magazine, the 55-year-old did not hold anything back, even talking about his past mistakes including using the bottle as a crutch for several years. “Well, I just saw it as a disservice to myself, as an escape,” he told Hopkins. When asked if it ever became "necessary" for him to have that "escape," Pitt responded honestly and stated, “to some degree, yes.”

Learning From His Past:

While coming to terms with his past mistakes was not easy for the actor, Pitt said he's learned to "value those missteps" because he has always taken away a lesson from each of them. “I’m realizing, as a real act of forgiveness for myself for all the choices that I’ve made that I’m not proud of, that I value those missteps, because they led to some wisdom, which led to something else,” the "Ad Astra" actor stated. “You can’t have one without the other. I see it as something I’m just now getting my arms around at this time in my life. But I certainly don’t feel like I can take credit for any of it.”

On Making Mistakes:

He added that he has learned to accept his flaws and feels it's necessary for everyone to do the same. “So you’re embracing all your mistakes. You’re saying, 'Let’s be our foibles, our embarrassment. There’s beauty in that,'" Pitt told Hopkins. He stressed the importance that mistakes do not define people, it is what they do after that should be significant. “I think we’re living in a time where we’re extremely judgmental and quick to treat people as disposable. We’ve always placed great importance on the mistake. But the next move, what you do after the mistake, is what really defines a person," he said. "We’re all going to make mistakes. But what is that next step? We don’t, as a culture, seem to stick around to see what that person’s next step is. And that’s the part I find so much more invigorating and interesting.”

Booze & Drug Free:

Months ago, Brad Pitt spoke out to The New York Times regarding his relationship with drugs and alcohol. The actor said that after Angelina Jolie filed for divorce in 2016, he spent two years “freeing” himself from those substances. “I had taken things as far as I could take it, so I removed my drinking privileges,” he told the outlet. He also spent over a year in Alcoholics Anonymous and shared his experience. “You had all these men sitting around being open and honest in a way I have never heard. It was this safe space where there was little judgment, and therefore little judgment of yourself.” Pitt also stated, “It was actually really freeing just to expose the ugly sides of yourself," adding, “There’s great value in that.”

Brad & Angelina Jolie:

After 12 years together, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie pulled the plug on their marriage in 2016. She filed for divorce after reports that Pitt got in an alleged fight with their oldest son, Maddox, over his drinking. The following year, he told GQ that he couldn't remember a day “since I got out of college when I wasn’t boozing or had a spliff, or something.” He stated booze, drugs, and cigarettes were like “pacifiers” to him and ultimately admitted that he was “running from [his] feelings.”
