There were a lot of surprising snubs in this year’s Oscar race, but the complete lack of nominations for Uncut Gems and especially leading man Adam Sandler was one of the biggest omissions. Sandler gave the performance of his life in the tense film, and he even made a joking threat if he went unrecognized:
“If I don’t get it, I’m going to fucking come back and do one again that is so bad on purpose just to make you all pay. That’s how I get them.”
Well, he didn’t get the nomination, so is Jack & Jill 2 on the way?
While he may absent from the Oscar race, Sandler and Uncut Gems cleaned up at the Independent Spirit Awards, and he gave an absolutely perfect speech while accepting the statue for Best Male Lead. He had a few things to say about his dashed Oscar dreams, even using his “Sandman” voice.
He joked about seeing host Aubrey Plaza again, having worked with the actress on Funny People, saying “that was the actually last time critics pretended not to hate me for five f*cking minutes.”
Sandler continued, paying hilarious lip service to his fellow nominees:
“I’d also like to give a shout-out to my fellow nominees, who will now and forever be known as the guys who lost to fucking Adam Sandler.”
Then, Sandler decided to come for the Academy Awards directly with this hilarious analogy, comparing the Oscars and the Independent Spirit awards as the “Best Looking” and “Best Personality” in the high school superlatives of awards shows.
“Tonight, as I look around this room, I realize the Independent Spirit Awards are the ‘Best Personality’ awards of Hollywood.
So when those feather-haired douchebag motherfuckers get their Oscars tomorrow night, their handsome good looks will fade in time, while our independent personalities will shine on forever!”
Sandler also praised independent film, saying that it’s “big part of the Adam Sandler ecosystem.”
“From my first film, a fearless look into the American education system through the eyes of a privileged sociopath by the name of Billy f*cking Madison, to my searing exploration of American college foosball and its manipulation of socially challenged athletes like Mr. Bobby Boucher. I have tried to sell my truths with a truly independent spirit, while also cashing some truly disturbingly large paychecks.”
