His Major New Studio

Tyler Perry wields a major amount of influence in Hollywood, and has built his empire through incredibly hard work. He just opened up a massive studio compound in Atlanta where he will have the influence and funding to produce tons of African American centric art. He told Variety:

"This is what I tell people — exposure is so important. If you see it, that means you can do it. And when I got here, I saw something, something vibrated in me that I thought, ‘This is where you need to be.’ So to see all of this happening and know that that moment was right, that was my God voice leading me here, that’s been really phenomenal."

"I feel this tremendous sense of obligation for all the people who helped me get here. Ones I don’t know, ones I may never know… all the way back to the ancestors who prayed for one day a generation to be able to be in this position. So I’m humbled by it."

Emphasis On Work Ethic

Perry is the definition of a busy man, and he posted a video on Twitter showing off all of the scripts that he wrote in 2019. There are MANY, and Perry claims to have produced them all without a writers' room. He says in the video:

"I don’t know if you know this, but all shows on television have a writers room. Most of the time, there are 10 people, 12 or whatever that write on these television shows. Well, I have no writers room. Nobody writes any of my work. I write it all. Why am I telling you this? I wrote all of these scripts by myself in 2019. What’s my point? Work ethic!"

That level of creative output is truly staggering, and it is certainly an accomplishment by Perry. However, people are conflicted online, recognizing Perry's impact while also criticizing his approach.

"Don’t misinterpret Tyler Perry criticism as hate, it comes from a genuine place because the man has the capacity to take black stories to the next level and we all recognize that. Instead he wants to tell his own warped version over and over and over and over and over and over"

"Your Work ethic is GREAT. But there are definitely a lot of fantastic black writers who could use the opportunity and paycheck to work in a writers room with and for you."

Is It All Just The Same Story?

Some people weren't on board with the criticism, pointing out the flaws in the arguments.

"yall in October: 😻😻😻😻we love tyler perryyyyyy yayyyyy 😻😻😻😻😻 look at all the black celebrities at his studiossssss 😻😻😻😻😻

yall now: tyler perry writes all his shows and makes the same movies ew we hate him 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢"

"The dragging of Tyler Perry and his 'work ethic' has entered day 3, longer than any of them scripts took."

Is the backlash fair? Should Perry open up a writers' room to tell a wider range of stories?
