Has He Read Her Memoir?

Jessica Simpson fed fans of celebrity gossip a whole meal with her surprisingly candid memoir, Open Book, offering up tons of details from her high profile relationships and career as a pop singer, reality star, and actress. One of her former flames that she got particularly candid about was John Mayer, and Andy Cohen asked Mayer whether he had read the book on Wednesday's Watch What Happens Live.

Complying with social distancing suggestions, Mayer called in via video call, and he played coy about the whole ordeal. He didn't trash his ex, and he didn't take Cohen's bait either.

What She Wrote About Him

Mayer made his point with a reference to Pee Wee's Big Adventure of all movies.

"I’ve heard about it. I’ve heard some bits. But as Pee Wee Herman says in Pee Wee’s Big Adventure before the movie of his life is about to play out at the end, he’s not watching the movie, and the reason he’s not watching the movie, he says, ‘I don’t have to watch it, Dottie, I lived it.’ And I think that’s prescient here."

Well, alrighty then! Simpson explained in her memoir that Mayer "wanted to have all of me or nothing."

"He’d walk into a room and pick up his guitar and you’d swoon. I didn’t really know the man behind the guitar. And that was my mission. Again and again, he told me he was obsessed with me, sexually and emotionally."

It Was Definitely Toxic

Simpson explained in her book that she was never really the dumb blonde that she was portrayed as in the media, but Mayer constantly made her feel intellectually inferior, which fueled her drinking.

"I constantly worried that I wasn’t smart enough for him. He was so clever and treated conversation like a friendly competition that he had to win."

"My anxiety would spike and I would pour another drink. It was the start of me relying on alcohol to mask my nerves."

The couple was off and on for a while, and Simpson believes that they hung on much too long for both their goods.

"He loved me in the way that he could and I loved that love for a very long time. Too long. And I went back and forth with it for a long time. But it did control me."

Did He Reach Out?

The definitive end to their relationship occurred when Mayer referred to her as "sexual napalm" in an infamous Playboy interview.

"He thought that was what I wanted to be called. I was floored and embarrassed that my grandmother was actually gonna read that. A woman and how they are in bed is not something that is ever talked about. It was shocking."

Simpson explained after the book came out that not one of her exes that she writes about have reached out to her since publication.

"None of those men [my exes] have reached out to me and I didn’t expect any of them to. They all know these stories, so I don’t think any of this came as a surprise to any of them."

Judging from Mayer's reaction on WWHL, he won't be reaching out any time soon.
