A New Memoir

Jessica Simpson has transition from a pop princess to fashion mogul and is now taking on a new career role: writer. Her memoir Open Book hits shelves soon, and People has a juicy excerpt in its Friday issue. The exclusive offers details about Simpson's two year relationship with singer John Mayer, who she dated after her divorce from first husband Nick Lachey.

Simpson explained that Mayer's love was intense and that "he wanted to have all of me or nothing."

"He’d walk into a room and pick up his guitar and you’d swoon. I didn’t really know the man behind the guitar. And that was my mission. Again and again, he told me he was obsessed with me, sexually and emotionally."

Simpson continued, revealing that while she wasn't the dumb blonde that people expected her to be, Mayer still made her feel insecure about her intellect.

"I constantly worried that I wasn’t smart enough for him. He was so clever and treated conversation like a friendly competition that he had to win."

Her anxiety over sounding smart got so intense that she would meltdown over ensuring that the grammar and spelling in her texts were correct.

"My anxiety would spike and I would pour another drink. It was the start of me relying on alcohol to mask my nerves.

Their Love Was Intense

The relationship ended up lasting much longer than it should have according to Simpson.

"He loved me in the way that he could and I loved that love for a very long time. Too long. And I went back and forth with it for a long time. But it did control me."

The final push to completely cut ties came after John Mayer referred to her as "sexual napalm" in a controversial Playboy interview shortly after they broke up for the final time.

"That girl, for me, is a drug. And drugs aren’t good for you if you do lots of them. Yeah, that girl is like crack cocaine to me. Sexually it was crazy. That’s all I’ll say. It was like napalm, sexual napalm."

Cutting Ties

Simpson claimed that she was taken aback by his comments and it pushed her to delete his number from her phone.

"He thought that was what I wanted to be called. I was floored and embarrassed that my grandmother was actually gonna read that. A woman and how they are in bed is not something that is ever talked about. It was shocking.

He was the most loyal person on the planet and when I read that he wasn’t, that was it for me. I erased his number. He made it easy for me to walk away."

While she and Mayer are no longer in touch, she has moved on completely.

"I know that he’s publicly apologized and I don’t want to take that away from him. I think he knows a lot of this about me already but he doesn’t know the perspective I have as a woman. That was Jess in her 20s."
