Snagging A Major Nomination

Directed and written by Lorene Scafaria, Hustlers has been a dark horse in the 2020 awards season discussion. Constance Wu and Jennifer Lopez in particular gave powerful performances, with Lopez owning the screen from the moment she comes onscreen to pole dance to Fiona Apple's "Criminal."

Lopez was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her role as Romona. In the months leading up to the major awards push, Lopez has emerged as a favorite and seems a lock for an Oscar nomination as well.

Her Fans Are Ecstatic

One of these fans is writer Joseph Longo, who hilariously requested that the pilot on his JetBlue flight encourage everyone to watch Hustlers on the flight to support Lopez's Golden Globe nomination. He tweeted out a video of the captain's announcement saying:

"A @JetBlue pilot read my plea that passengers watch Hustlers in honor of @JLo’s #GoldenGlobes nom. I called myself The Backup JLo, but I guess I’m her backup dancer. The friendly skies supports our Fly Girl!"

Lopez saw the tweet and responded with "This is amazing!!!!!!! You can be my backup dancer any day🕺🏻THANK YOU FOR THE SUPPORT! @josephlongo_ @JetBlue ♥️😂"

Responding To Her Nomination

Lopez also posted a charming video on social media after she received her nomination news expressing her gratitude.

"Could not be prouder to be recognized by the HFPA. Hustlers was a labor of love, sweat and perseverance written, directed, produced, edited and starring a group of bad-ass women. I am proud and honored to represent them and this film!!!! ♥️ #HustlersMovie #ramona"

Lopez perfectly combined the physicality of the role with an appealingly emotional core, so she's more than earned the accolades that she's been given this season.

During the Hustlers' press tour, Lopez was open about how the good reviews were so important to her. She told Hoda Kobt:

"I’ve just been working hard for so long — for my whole life — so it’s nice. You work hard your whole life, and you wonder if anybody notices. We’re not even there! Just to talk about it is amazing."

Regardless of how awards season shakes out, Lopez has only good things to say about her time making Hustlers, particularly due to a largely female cast and crew.

"Having all women on the set — in front of the camera, behind the camera, behind the scenes with producers — it’s definitely a different experience. It’s not something that happens every day in Hollywood. I’ve done, I don’t know, 40 movies or something like that. It’s never happened. I don’t think it’s ever happened."
