Elijah McClain: Janelle Monáe & LaKeith Stanfield Demand Justice For 23-Year-Old Who Died In Police Custody

By Ryan Naumann

Singer Janelle Monáe & actor LaKeith Stanfield are calling for justice for Elijah McClain after he died in police custody and no charges have been brought against the officers involved.

The “Atlanta” actor posted a photo of Elijah looking happy. LaKeith wrote, “This is why we say Fuck 12. There are no good ones if you aren’t speaking out against this behavior. They broke their own laws and murdered this young man for NO reason.:

Janelle commented, “The rage I feel.” Earlier in the week, she wrote to her followers, “I WILL NEVER BE OVER WHAT HAPPENED TO ELIJAH MCCLAIN. I find myself emotionally debilitated and having fits of rage. This is triggering AND WE MUST KEEP FIGHTING. SHARE HIS STORY.”

One follower said “may he rest in peace so sad what happen to him 🥺💔” and another wrote, “I'm so fucking mad this shit has to stop.”

On August 24, 2019, 23-year-old Elijah Jovan McClain walked to the store to buy ice tea. He was wearing a ski mask because he was anemic and would sometimes get cold.

On his way home, Elijah was stopped by Aurora Police Department officers who claim to have received a 911 call reporting a “suspicious person” wearing a ski mask. Footage released from the scene shows Elijah pleading with officers to let him go. Three officers, Nathan Woodyard, Jason Rosenblatt, and Randy Roedema, claim Elijah resisted arrest and proceeded to tackle him to the ground. Elijah was 5’6 and weighed only 140 pounds.

He can be heard telling them, “I can’t breathe. I have my ID right here. My name is Elijah McClain. That’s my house. I was just going home. I’m an introvert. I’m just different. That’s all. I’m so sorry. I have no gun. I don’t do that stuff. I don’t do any fighting. Why are you attacking me? I don’t even kill flies! I don’t eat meat! But I don’t judge people, I don’t judge people who do eat meat. Forgive me. All I was trying to do was become better. I will do it. I will do anything. Sacrifice my identity, I’ll do it. You all are phenomenal. You are beautiful and I love you. Try to forgive me. I’m a mood Gemini. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. Ow, that really hurt. You are all very strong. Teamwork makes the dream work. Oh, I’m sorry I wasn’t trying to do that. I just can’t breathe correctly.”

The autopsy results were inconclusive. A petition has been launched calling for District Attorney, Dave Young, to resign after he continues to defend his decision not to bring charges against the police officers. The investigation was recently reopened after millions signed a petition and thousands protested in Colorado.

During one tribute, Aurora police were accused of pepper spraying the peaceful protestors.
