A Career Renaissance

Eddie Murphy is having a major career renaissance following a few years away from Hollywood. But Murphy is back in a big way and firing on all fronts: he's getting some of his career best reviews for Dolemite Is My Name, he's working on sequels to Coming To America and Beverly Hills Cop, and he's returning to Saturday Night Live as host on December 21st with musical guest Lizzo.

Returning To 'SNL'

Murphy joined SNL when he was only 19 years old back in 1980, and he was a cast member for 4 seasons. Shockingly, Murphy has never hosted SNL in the 35 years since his residency, until now.

He was recently a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and he explained to Ellen that he "wanted to go back at the right time.”

"They had the 40th-anniversary thing a few years back. I saw all the other actors and actresses and the people in the crew and I got this big burst of nostalgia, and I started feeling like ‘Oh, I want to go back.’"

A Movie That He's Proud Of

Murphy continued, telling Ellen that "Dolemite made it the perfect time ’cause we got a funny movie."

Back in October, Murphy told Entertainment Weekly that after a bomb with Mr. Church, his last film, it is encouraging to return with a film as good as Dolemite.

"I didn’t want to end on Mr. Church. I wanted to do something where, if I decided to never get off the couch again and just go do stand-up, it would be a nice way to go out."

"It’s great to be in a movie that works and that’s funny. That’s the only reason why I’m making movies. I want to be in one that people like, and it’s been a long time since I’ve had one. [Dolemite] is a well-made movie and it’s f—ing funny — and that’s a good feeling."

Never Again

Murphy also told Ellen that he's loved working on Coming To America 2, especially bringing back all of the characters that he played in the original film. However, he explained to Ellen that he doesn't want to do another "make up movie" after this one.

"You know, every time I do a makeup movie I always say, ‘This is the last time I’m doing this sh*t.’ And then I always wind up back in the makeup chair."

However, he usually finds his way back where "it kinda makes sense. So I’m never doing it again, now."

So don't expect another sequel to The Nutty Professor.
