A One Year Update

Jeopardy! fans have been extremely concerned for legendary host Alex Trebek since he announced that he was battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer last year. Trebek has been keeping fans up to date with his treatment and on Wednesday, he released a video of his "one-year update."

Only 18% of stage 4 pancreatic cancer patients survive the first year, so this is an incredible milestone for the 79-year-old. In the video, Trebek is confident and says that his oncologist believes that he'll be in the 7% that make it to the second year of treatment.

However, Trebek doesn't hold back on the difficulty of the past year, admitting that it has been a painful experience.

"There were moments of great pain, days when certain bodily functions no longer functioned, and sudden massive attacks of great depression that made me wonder if it really was worth fighting on. But I brushed that aside quickly, because that would have been a massive betrayal — a betrayal of my wife and soulmate, Jean, who has given her all to help me survive."

Trebek has been open about how his wife has been a source of comfort and strength to him through this diagnosis, so it's good to see that they're still going strong.

Trebek continued, also saying that he didn't want to dishonor other cancer patients by giving up, either.

"It would have been a betrayal of other cancer patients who have looked to me as an inspiration and a cheerleader of sorts of the value of living and hope. And it would certainly have been a betrayal of my faith in God and the millions of prayers that had been said on my behalf."

He ends his heartfelt video with an optimistic message:

"[I]f I, no, if we—because so many of us are involved in this same situation—if we take it just one day at a time with a positive attitude, anything is possible. I’ll keep you posted."

Jeopardy! fans flooded the replies thanking Trebek for being such an inspiration through these hard times.

"Alex Trebek is an inspiration for so many patients, doctors, and human beings. He has a fighting spirit that is as powerful as anything modern medicine has to offer. Because no matter how advanced our treatments and chemotherapy can be, it’s the will to fight that matters most."

"Thanks for inspiring others while you fight this illness yourself. Your two year update will be even better. Anything is possible."

"Alex please take my life energy you need it more than i do please"
