Banksy just shook the art world by destroying one of his famous works in front of a crowd of people moments after it was sold at a Sotheby's auction.
A framed "Girl with Balloon," one of the famed street-artist's most well known pieces, was sold Friday night at Sotheby's London for $1.4 million. As soon as the winning bid was announced, the painting slid through a paper shredder which had been concealed in the bottom of the frame, effectively destroying the art.
Art aficionados appeared to gasp as the act went down, which was all planned by Banksy and touted on his IG with the caption, "Going, going, gone..."
The director for Sotheby's told the crowd, "It appears we just got Banksy-ed," and those in attendance hailed the act, of course, as brilliant. It's unclear if the winner is still on the hook to pay for the shredded piece, but there's a good chance it's actually worth more now that it became a famous Banksy stunt.
