Shocking new details of the sexual relationship and marriage between the late singer, Aaliyah, and R. Kelly were brought to light in Lifetime's new documentary, and The Blast has obtained the document at the center of the controversy.
According to the marriage certificate issued by Cook County, Illinois, Aaliyah claimed her age was 18 at the time of her marriage to R. Kelly, even though she was actually 15-years-old.
In the first part of Lifetime's docu-series, "Surviving R. Kelly," one of the singer's former backup dancers, Jovante Cunningham claims she once witnessed Kelly committing statutory rape against underage Aaliyah.

Kelly's former tour manager, Demetrius Smith, explained that after Kelly feared he may have impregnated Aaliyah while she was underage, marriage paperwork was forged and a secret wedding went down at a hotel room.
According to the marriage certificate, the wedding was officiated on August 31, 1994 by Elder Nathan J. Edmond during a religious ceremony in Rosemont, Illinois.

The marriage was made official when it was recorded on September 6, 1994, but it was reportedly later annulled after Aaliyah's parents filed paperwork.
After the first episode of "Surviving R. Kelly" aired, Aaliyah's mother went on Twitter to refute the claims that R. Kelly had sex with the young singer, and said the family will not tolerate "lies and fabrications ... spewed from the forked tongues of saboteurs of Aaliyah's legacy."
