George Lucas’ ex-wife was apparently one of the editors on the original "Star Wars" films! Marcia Lucas, though, is a very successful editor; she even won an Academy Award precisely for her work in the original Star Wars movie. In her opinion as a professional and potentially as someone who was very much involved in the creative process behind the original Star Wars stories the new movies are just awful! She had plenty of hate to throw around!

Not A Fan of JJ Abrams

//___o

There are a ton of things that Marcia Lucas is not happy with the new movies. By the way, if you haven’t seen them, here’s a big spoiler alert for you! The main issue that she has with the movies falls on JJ Abrams's writing style. In her mind, he has shown that he doesn’t understand the Star Wars story and that’s why he hasn’t been able to replicate much of the success of the older movies. Luckily for Abrams, she’s offered to help, saying in the book “Howard Kazanjian: A Producer’s Life” by J.W. Rinzler.,

“You can quote me: J.J. Abrams, Kathy Kennedy — talk to me.”

The spoiler alert is in full effect right here! If there was one thing that she totally hated about the new movies it was how easily they just killed off all of the beloved characters from the first films. To be fair, she’s probably not alone in thinking this. She directly talked about the decision to kill Harrison Ford’s Han Solo saying,

“When I saw that movie where they kill Han Solo, I was furious. I was furious when they killed Han Solo. Absolutely, positively, there was no rhyme or reason to it. I thought, ‘You don’t get the Jedi story. You don’t get the magic of “Star Wars.”

Just Trying To Fit The Trends Of The Times

Star Wars is by no means the only movie franchise that has suffered from movie producers trying to put out a story that will appeal to modern audiences. The main character for these new Star Wars movies is a woman. Marcia Lucas though seems to think that her inclusion in the story feels forced. She’s given no real backstory to work with. On this topic she mentioned,

“They think it’s important to appeal to a woman’s audience, so now their main character is this female, who’s supposed to have Jedi powers, but we don’t know how she got Jedi powers, or who she is,”

JJ Abrams has actually not tried to defend himself all that much against the avalanche of criticism that has come his way. Mostly for the same reasons that Marcia Lucas is cutting. Killing off all of the beloved characters and doing a poor job to develop the new ones. Abrams has hinted though that someone at Disney is messing with his creative process. That’s why the movies have not been great. He talked about their lack of juice saying,

“I’ve had all sorts of situations where you plan things in a certain way, and you suddenly find yourself doing something that’s 180 degrees different, and then sometimes it works really well and you feel like, ‘Wow, that really came together,’ and other times you think, ‘Oh, my God I can’t believe this is where we are,”

He’s hinting that he had a plan. For one reason or another things didn’t come out how he had drawn them up!
