The public has always wondered what actors and musicians are really thinking about in award shows. Generally when you lose you have to put on a gracious loser’s face as Joey says on Friends. Also, there are always massive after parties. At least we’ve been led to believe that after-parties are massive and epic. Yet, not a lot of actors or musicians ever come clean about their true feelings when it comes to award shows. Then Ed Sheeran showed up and got real, claiming that American award shows are not what they seem!
Award Shows Are Full of Resentment
Ed Sheeran recently performed at the MTV VMA’s therefore his experience with American award shows is pretty fresh. While his performance at the event was “normal” he potentially wasn’t having the time of his life at the event. This is because in his view these types of shows are filled with “resentment and hatred”. Sheeran came on “The Julia Show” after his performance at the VMAs. He shattered the image of American award shows saying,
“The room is filled with resentment and hatred toward everyone else and it’s quite an uncomfortable atmosphere,”
So Artists, & Musicians Hate Each Other?
Sheeran actually went on to explain his first comment. It’s not that he would have beef with Taylor Swift or someone like this. Although she does have beef with a couple of colleges. That’s not the point though. Sheeran defended his artist and musician colleges. It’s their entourages though that he just can’t stand. He went into detail about what he thinks the real problem is saying,
No Ad to show
“All the artists are sweet people, but they’re, like, surrounded by entourages that want them to win, too, so it’s one artist surrounded by 10 people and another artist surrounded by 10 people and everyone is kind of giving each other the side-eye,”
It’s Not Just The VMAs
No Ad to show
The “Thinking Out Loud” singer covered his tracks again from his own criticism. As he explained that he wasn’t saying this just to throw some shade at the VMAs. He just performed at the show and potentially got a fat check to do so. It’s not too smart to criticize a patron. So, instead of making these comments sound like they were a direct criticism of the VMAs, he spread the hate around. Saying that all of the award shows in the US suffered from the same issues.
“It’s nothing to do with MTV or the award show, it’s at all the other awards shows,”
England Award Shows, On The Other Hand, Those Are Great
At this point in the interview, Sheeran had thrown some shots at the American entertainment industry in general. Essentially his opinion is that the atmosphere is too competitive and that’s not what he’s in it for. That sounds like a respectable point of view. What could rub people the wrong way though is his comparison between shows in America and in England. Where he even throws some shade at the famous after parties for these shows. Sheeran mentioned,
“In England, our award shows are just like everyone gets drunk and no one really cares who wins or loses, it’s just sort of a good night out,” He went on to criticize American after parties saying, “The after-parties, again … it’s not just musicians. It’s musicians, all their entourages, then you got influencers and blah blah blah”
If you thought you were missing out when you didn’t get the invite to the VMAs Ed Sheeran says you shouldn’t worry. The party wasn’t that great anyway.
