The year 2021 marked a very weird period for the annual Golden Globes, courtesy of the pandemic. The 78th Golden Globe Awards took place on February 28, 2021. This was two months later than originally planned.
It was the first time ever that our favourite Hollywood stars didn’t get the chance to turn heads on the red carpet before a magical, star-studded evening, while they celebrated the best in television and film.
The ceremony was staged between two American coasts, with many famous personalities participating via video calls.
However, that didn’t diminish the oomph on display. Fashion was still the major talking point. Although it was a virtual event, there was still a plethora of fashion wattage flaunted by celebrities.
Some of the celebrities amazed fans with their outfits and broke out the hottest couture from the Paris runways. For some others, their style left much to be desired. They flopped with their dresses and turned heads for all the wrong reasons.
Although they all zoomed in from home and watched the ceremony from behind their screens, here are our top picks of this year’s worst dressed celebrities.
Cynthia Erivo And Her Chesspiece Dress
The 34-year-old actress was very easy to spot. This was attributed to her colorful and eye-catching neon-green Valentino dress. Her dress was so bright, and that made it look more like a Halloween costume than a Hollywood gown.
The structured gown featured a figure-hugging bodice and a large hoop-style skirt, and left the naturally-beautiful star looking as though she had donned a Halloween costume.

The outfit was made of mesh with puffed seams, an unyielding shape, and the thick hug of neoprene. It would appear that the wide-hemmed gown was an in-built social distancer.
This image was further emphasized by the addition of sky-high silver platform shoes, which she showed off on stage while presenting an award. The shoes resembled a skyscraper and added to the cartoon-ish quality of the dress.
One observer likened the gown to a lampshade while others remarked it resembled a board game piece. Her gown was adorned with more than 60,000 glass beads, crystals and sequins. She topped off the look with jewels from Tiffany & Co.
Although the dress made her stand out, it wasn’t for the reasons she wanted. The “Outsider” actress was styled by Bolden Jason. He mentioned that the actress knew nothing about his creative vision but trusted him all the same. It would appear that she trusted him for nothing.
Maya Rudolph In A Valentino Dress
Maya Rudolph opted for a Valentino dress for the award show but she failed to impress the fashion police. She combined a red frumpy floral print with white heels and it was a complete no-no. The ill-fitted dress was more of an eyesore than elegant.
The flashy floral-print dress looked a lot like a Hawaiian shirt, rather than a glamorous Hollywood gown. To add insult to injury, the shape of the dress– which fell to her mid-calf, was incredibly unflattering.
It made the stunning 48-year-old appear as though she had simply draped a piece of fabric over herself in a hurry to appear on the award show.
The dress had a trashy feel which was emphasized by her huge and chunky glittering necklace. It did her figure no favours and the little white heels were bizzare for the style she donned.
We expected more from her, but it would appear that the comedian never seemed to nail an outfit. She finished off her look with a pair of strappy Jimmy Choo sandals and diamond Phillipa ear cuffs by Ana Khouri.
Jason Sudeikis In A Hoodie
It was either Jason Sudeikis did not expect to win for Best Actor in a TV series or he felt his attire was appropriate in Covid-19 times.
Either way, the candy-coloured tie-dye hoodie the actor donned when making his acceptance speech was just cringey to watch.
It was a far cry from the black-tie ensembles that other stars wore for the event. Other schools of thought alluded his style to the effect of his breakup which occurred this year.
It turned out that the hoodie was from his sister’s company, “Forward Space,” and he wore it to support her.
Jodie Foster In Prada Pajamas
Jodie Foster was one of the few women who dressed down for the evening, as she accepted her award in pajamas.
Foster was comfortable in her home and sat alongside her partner Alexandra Hedison (who was also in pajamas) and their dog.
It’s possible she hosted a full-on pajama party, as a group of her friends could be heard celebrating her win in the background, but they weren’t seen.
It was quite a tacky way to attend a show of that calibre, regardless of the fact that it was online.
She won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture for her role in “The Mauritanian.”
