For someone who has been in the public eye for such a long time, we know remarkably little about Venus Williams’ personal life. One thing that the older Williams sister is making clear is that she’s currently single. Even at 41 years young she isn’t in a hurry to find someone. Still, she says that her friends have insisted for years that she look to find a partner. From her point of view though, although she’s single she doesn’t feel lonely. She’s looking to change the narrative about single people who are longer in the tooth!
Not Feeling Desperate
Venus is going to be on the cover of next month’s issue of Cosmopolitan. In the magazine, she’s giving out a couple more details about her life. As we mentioned, she’s been a really “private” person throughout her career. Even though she’s dealt with media attention for decades. One of the things that she revealed is that when it comes to dating she’s not desperate. Even, though, not even her friends believe her story she mentions,
“I have a lot of friends who don’t believe me when I say that I like my life and I don’t want to change it for any reason. I’m not desperate, and they don’t believe me,”
Helping Change The Narrative
Single doesn’t necessarily mean ready to mingle. At least that’s not how Venus looks at it. Although she mentioned that many of her friends don’t believe the idea that she is ok with staying single there are friends that are going to bat for her. Supporting her decision to walk life without a partner. Friend and sportscaster Jemele Hill told Cosmo about Williams’ way of life,
“There’s this sort of quiet resistance that Venus always carries herself with. She’s chosen to live her life so unapologetically, and I think there’s a beauty in that,”
She goes on to mention that Williams doesn’t fall into the category of women, African American women in particular that are desperate to find someone.
The Focus is Still On Tennis
At 41, and having recently battled a series of injuries that ultimately forced her out of this year’s US Open, Venus isn’t ready to call it quits just yet. Even though she essentially left the tournament because it was almost impossible for her to walk due to a leg injury. Venus still plans to get back on the court as soon as she can. Even though she may not be ready to settle down it’s clear that her days on the court as a professional seem to be numbered.
Recent Comments on Mental Health
Another subject that seems to be very near and dear Williams’ heart is mental health. Just a couple of months ago when Naomi Osaka talked about feeling anxious at a press conference Venus was one of the first stars to show her support. While also giving Osaka a friendly word of advice. Saying that she dealt with criticism reminding herself that most people that criticized her could not and had never played at such a high level. From the looks of things, single or not Venus is still out there living her best life.
