'The Wire' Star Michael K. Williams Found Dead In NYC Of Possible Drug Overdose

1:38 pm PT -- According to reports, the Emmy-nominated actor may have fatally overdosed from possibly heroin or fentanyl. "No foul play indicated" on the scene says NYPD, and "No forced entry, the apartment was in order."

Actor Michael K. Williams was reportedly found dead inside his New York apartment from what is being called a "possible overdose."

The 'Wire' star died after he was found by a family member in his Brooklyn home, law enforcement sources told the New York Post. According to the report, Williams was found in the living room of his Kent Avenue penthouse by his nephew.

As for the cause of his death, according to the outlet, "drug paraphernalia was found in the apartment, suggesting a possible overdose." At this point, police are not revealing exactly the type of drugs they believe to be involved with the death, but are using it as an operating theory.

Now, the medical examiner in New York will have to run toxicology screenings and an autopsy to officially rule the cause of death.

The NYC native was famous for his role as Omar Little on the popular television series, 'The Wire.' The actor has another massive comeback on TV with his role as "Chalky White" in 'Boardwalk Empire.'

Willams was open about his struggles with drugs throughout his career, saying that while filming 'The Wire' a role about someone who robs drug dealers, affected him in real life. The actor revealed in a 2016 interview, that he once stumbled into a church in New Jersey seeking help with his drug addiction.

“When I came through those doors, I was broken. … This was, I would say, around the … third season of ‘The Wire,’" Williams said. He continued, “I was on drugs. … I was in jeopardy of destroying everything I had worked so hard for, and I came in those doors, and I met a man who had never even heard of ‘The Wire,’ much less watched it,”

Unfortunately, the five-time Emmy nominated actor had just joined the untitled biopic of legendary boxer and heavyweight champion George Foreman. Williams was tapped to play Doc Broadus, who was Foreman's trainer and mentor. At the time, Broadus was one of the key personnel at the Job Corps when Foreman arrived there. He ran a boxing program and saw the potential in him. After one year of training with Doc, Foreman won a Gold Medal in the 1968 Olympics in the heavyweight division.

Michael K. Williams was Emmy nominated for his performance in 'Lovecraft Country' and was also nominated for his work on Netflix's 'When They See Us' and mini-series 'The Night Of.'
