This wasn't an easy upbringing. His parents split while he was young, his father suffered from mental illness and he grew up in abject poverty when they returned to the states.

Kelly and his dad moved to his aunt's place in Cleveland, Ohio. Due to his dad's mental illness, he suffered bullying from other children in the neighborhood. He later reconnected with his mother in his teenage years.

Over the years, Kelly had been outspoken about how much of an unruly and stubborn adolescent he was and how he disobeyed so many rules. He even claimed to have skipped a semester of high school and lied to his father about it.

Machine Gun Kelly Had A Strained Relationship With His Father

Kelly opened up about him and his father's strained relationship due to their different viewpoints and Kelly's defiance to his father's overbearing rules. They grew apart as a result of this, which the rapper said he now regrets.

In 2019, he posted an emotional tweet about visiting him for the first time in years. “Flew out to see my dad today. broke down in my daughter's arms when I saw him. I should’ve told him that I loved him years ago. breaks my f—in the heart that we wasted all this time…"

Kelly's father eventually died in 2020 and the rapper took it really hard. When GQ asked Kelly who he would apologize to, he confessed that it would be his dad.

"I'd say sorry to my father. I have such a rule-abiding, amazing daughter and I was such a rule-breaking, shitty son. The legal fees, the tens of thousands of dollars from the time I got arrested, and finding out your son missed a whole semester of high school because he was waking up and pretending to go but never going.  I get why it took us 25 years to finally get along."
