The beef between Drake and Kanye West is far from over and it seems like the fans of the former have taken it a bit overboard.
The latest chapter of the beef unfolded on Saturday when Drake’s fans vandalized West’s childhood home in Chicago.
Photos surfaced this weekend of three different signs that were left on the front steps of the rapper’s childhood home.
One referenced Drake’s verse in Triple Redd’s latest song, “Betrayal,” where he referred to West as “Burned Out.”
Another sign took a jab at Justin Laboy, a social media influencer labeled by fans as West’s Boy Friday, as he had been announcing updates about West’s new album, “Donda,” and seemingly posting on West’s behalf.
The last sign promoted Drake’s upcoming album, “Certified Lover Boy.” However, we can’t say for sure if this was a marketing gimmick or much ado over nothing from an overzealous fan.
No actual damage was done to the building but many viewed this move as an act of trespassing citing that West’s space has been invaded.
Unfortunately, West’s address is widely publicized and even with a lot of barricades, he might not be able to keep prowlers at bay.
Keep reading below for more details.
Backstory
This random act of vandalism comes in retaliation to West’s public reveal of the Canadian rapper’s home address late last month. West took to his Twitter page in the early hours of the morning to share a Google Maps screenshot of Drake’s Toronto, Ontario mansion. Although he deleted it immediately, fans had already started weighing in on it. They slammed the rapper for “crossing a line” and “taking things too far” especially since the post included street names.
However, Drake replied to Kanye’s attempt at doxxing him by posting a light-hearted video of him laughing in his convertible. The irony of it all was that Drake’s address was public knowledge and could be found through a simple Google search.
This doxxing attempt stemmed from a week ago when West seemingly responded to Drake’s diss track via a group chat that West posted on his Instagram story. Champagne papi raps, “All these fools I’m beefin’ that I barely know / Forty-five, forty-four (burned out), let it go / Ye ain’t changin’ s— for me, it’s set in stone.”
West responded with a screenshot of a group chat which he posted on his Instagram story. It read; “I live for this. I’ve been f–ked with by nerd ass jock n****s like you my whole life. You will never recover, I promise you.” He then shared an image of Joaquin Phoenix.
West And Drake’s Original Feud
This fracas between the rappers has gone on for over a decade. Back in 2008, the duo was friendly, as Drake once publicly proclaimed his love for the rapper.
“I had the utmost respect for Kanye West. I’d even go as far as to say he’s the most influential person as far as a musician that I’d ever had in my life,” he told the press at the time.
Two years later, Drake was spotted with West’s ex, Amber Rose, fuelling rumors of a possible relationship. The year after that, Drake started to regard West as a rivalry rather than an inspiration.
“My goal is to surpass everything he’s accomplished,” Drake said. “I don’t want to be as good as Kanye, I want to be better,” he concluded.
Around that time, Pusha T, West’s colleague, and friend, released “The Story Of Addison,” a single about Drake’s secret son. How did Pusha T know about this? Drake and Pusha were never friends, so it was assumed that the rapper got the information about Drake’s son from Kanye.
Ever since there’s been a long and complicated feud that obviously shows no signs of slowing down.
About West’s Vandalized Home
The house, which was vandalized by Drake’s fans, was owned by West’s late mom, Donda, for 17 years.
It also served as a centerpiece of his third listening party for his recent album, “Donda.” He was so attached to it that he created a replica version of the crib in Soldier Field, the Chicago stadium, to help narrate his Donda tale.
Photos from one of West fan’s social media pages showed that the stadium had the same light blue paint and box-like structure similar to his childhood home. The rapper’s childhood home was purchased for $225,000 and is in the process of renovation.
Moving Forward
As both rap icons begin to jostle for the pop-culture throne with their new LPs (and word on the grapevine is that West released his album before Drake to spite him), one thing is sure– this feud isn’t ending anytime soon.
It may or may not become worse now that it has fallen into the hands of what’s called an overzealous fanbase.
Drake and West are ready to go head-to-head for the top spot in the streaming charts and will continue to hurl subliminal messages and jabs at each other.
Until then, we wait patiently for news regarding each of their albums.
