Breakups are terrible—not everyone gets a happy-ever-after ending, and it’s even worse for those who are in the public eye. For celebrities who are under constant media coverage, whose intimate lives make it to every headline and tabloid news, everyone idolizes their relationship, and they can never do wrong in fans’ eyes. So when they break up, fans are heartbroken, like it happened to them.
Everyone gets invested in celebrities’ relationships, no thanks to the constant and frequent intrusion of the media. When things go south, they feel a twinge of betrayal and cannot believe this happened to the couples they personally shipped.
Fans love a good romance so they ship and keep tabs on the relationships of their favorite celebrities, but sometimes, it seems like their favorite celebs can’t keep a good thing going. Although there are celebrity couples who stood the test of time, there were some who became the talk of the town, flamed for a while, and eventually vanished from people’s consciousness.
Here, let’s take a trip down the memory lane and remember with nostalgia, couples who could have been, and whose breakups rocked our world while subtly reinforcing that love might be dead.
Brad Pitt And Jennifer Aniston
They were one of the hottest and most talked-about couples in the late ’90s and early 2000s. According to an interview with E!, they were matched by their agents in 1998. They made a public appearance together at the 1999 Emmys, looking hot and perfect for each other. When they got engaged and eventually married in 2000, the tabloids went agog with excitement.
It was reported to be a lavish wedding with 200 guests in attendance, four bands, and a gospel choir. They went on to make another appearance the same year at the Emmys, this time, as a married couple. However, there were rumours which spoke of Pitt’s desire for children while Aniston did not share in this fantasy.
As all things, including beautiful things, come to an end, Pitt and Aniston split after five years of marriage over a speculated case of infidelity. It was rumored that Pitt had an affair with Angelina Jolie, his co-star while on the set of the movie, “Mr and Mrs Smith.” During an interview with Vogue, Jolie would eventually confess that she fell for Pitt while shooting the movie, stating that anytime they had something to do together, “there was a lot of joy and teamwork,” and they just became “kind of a pair.”
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
It would appear that, on the issue of relationships, Pitt got the short end of the stick. Theirs was much talked about from start to finish, considering the circumstance that brought them together.
Jolie was always pitched as a mistress by the public, even though they vehemently denied that their relationship did not start off as an affair. The duo met on the set of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” and started dating publicly in 2005.
They got married in 2014 and birthed three children–Shiloh, Vivienne, and Knox. They also adopted a son, Pax. Pitt became a step-dad to Jolie’s formerly adopted children, Maddox and Zahara. There were rumors of a breakup that bedeviled their relationship, so when the split eventually happened, it came as a shock, because this time, it was true.
On how they managed to deal with co-parenting after the breakup, Jolie said in an interview with Vanity Fair that they cared for their family and were working towards the same goal. Pitt also added in the interview with the publication that regardless of what happened between them, they would still be friends. It’s unclear what caused the split but fans can’t really get over it.
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner
At first, they seemed like the kind of couple to go on the long haul, but it wasn’t so. Affleck and Garner met on the set of “Pearl Harbor,” and fell in love on the set of “Daredevil.” At that time, they were with different partners.
They eventually split from their respective partners and got married in 2005. They had three children together named; Samuel, Violet and Seraphina Rose. They were a mushy couple who constantly gushed about their lives together.
Sadly, they announced their split in 2015 stating Affleck’s affair with the nanny of the couple, Christine Ouzounian, to which he denied. They were constantly seen together, ruffling rumors that they might reconcile, but all this was shut down, as they officially filed for divorce in 2017. Affleck is now dating singer Jennifer Lopez. The actor was spotted shopping for rings days ago, which fans believe could be an engagement ring.
Emma Stone And Andrew Garfield
The co-stars from “The Amazing Spider-Man” were the definition of relationship goals– they took cute and mushy pictures and even trolled the paparazzi for fun.
Everyone went bizarre about this relationship as the chemistry and compatibility were on point. Stone and Garfield met on the set of ” The Amazing Spider-Man” in 2010 and cemented their relationship status after they were caught kissing in 2012.
However, their split was reported in 2015, although it wasn’t officially confirmed by either of the couples. Sources said Stone reportedly ended things with Andrew after he had supposedly been in a “dark place” for months while filming his then latest movie. They were spotted several times after this, confusing fans on the state of their relationship by their frequent appearances together and congenial attitude towards each other.
