Recently, Vergara opened up about receiving a cancer diagnosis from her doctor at age 28. Of course, she would have been shocked by the soles of her feet, but instead of panicking, guess what she did instead?

Not Good News
During a discussion on the 2021 Stand Up Cancer telethon in the late hours of Saturday, August 21, 2021, Vergara, who was a co-host for the event, got candid about her experiences with thyroid cancer, and how she received the news.
She noted that at age 28, she visited the hospital for a routine checkup, and while the examination was going on, the doctors noticed something bulging around her throat area. After trying to feel it, they asked if they could run a few tests to make sure that everything was going fine with her.

She went on to say that after a series of tests, the final results came back, and it was mentioned that the bulgy thing near her throat area, was indeed thyroid cancer. This was no doubt one of the most shocking thing that the actress had ever heard concerning her health at such a young age. Keep reading to find out what she did next.
Bravery Doesn’t Come Easy
Still speaking about her ordeal, Vergara acknowledged that for many young people in the world, hearing the word ‘Cancer’ associated with their health problems, was no doubt cause for alarm immediately.
However, instead of panicking and trying to give out on a situation that she could not control at the time, the “Hot Pursuit” actress said that she took the news with a brave face, and listened to the doctors’ explanations about the next steps to take. In the same vein, she decided to read up on the type of cancer and consider the choices that she had.
“I read every bool and found out everything I could about it i was fortunate to have caught it early and to have the support of my doctors and most importantly, my family,” she said.
Educating herself on the type of cancer that she had been diagnosed with, helped her consider many options, and see know more about the illness than it did about her.
Sofia Vergara Had Surgery
It’s unclear at what stage the doctors caught the cancer, but according to the actress, her cancer battle started with the diagnosis, then the surgery.
She had to decline filming a Pepsi commercial at that time because she had to make plans for her impending surgery. Although the actress put up a brave front, she said that it was a scary journey for her because of all the things she had heard about cancer. She was young, vibrant and energetic, and having cancer, was like all her walls had come crumbling down.

“I was very young, and when they tell you that word, it’s like, ‘What are you talking about? You always think death.’ That’s all you think when they tell you that, so it was, it was pretty scary,” she said.
However, despite her fears and reservations, the actress went ahead with the surgery, which required the removal of her thyroid, and went on to make a speedy recovery.
What Kept Sofia Vergara Going?
Vergara has always been a fearless woman, who is never afraid to tell people what she sees, and how they make her feel. Ellen DeGeneres has some cues to give.
In her fearless state, she told herself that getting depressed or feeling dejected about the situation she had found herself in at age 28 was not the best option. She also expressed that at that time, she had a responsibility to her kid to keep fighting no matter what she had to go through.
No doubt, it was not an easy phase for the “Machete Kills” actress, but she pressed on because she knew that she did not have the luxury of feeling any sad emotion. Her kid was indirectly depending on her to be brave and live. And she did, she LIVED!
