Johnny Depp Finally Speaks Out About Hollywood Boycott

Johnny Depp has taken a huge hit from Hollywood over the past few years, during his battle with Amber Heard, and he is finally speaking out about the treatment. He continues to battle Amber in court, and at the same time, he’s looking to rebuild his image. Depp recently had a sit down with the British Newspaper The Times, where he talked about an issue that his loyal fans have been pointing at for years. The fact that he’s effectively being boycotted by Hollywood because of his very public breakup with Amber Heard.
His Film “Minamata” Has Been Frozen By MGM
Although Depp and Heard’s legal battle has been a highly publicized affair, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor hasn’t been too vocal about his situation with the press. Why is he talking about his issues now? Well, Depp seems to think that MGM is essentially refusing to publish his latest project, a movie titled Minamata.
The rights to the movie were bought by MGM in October of last year. At the time, it was said that it would have a February 2021 release date. However, the studio has since pushed back its release date, “because of the pandemic”. Depp and the director of the movie think there are other reasons behind this pushback.
Throwing Shots At MGM
It appears that Depp has waited long enough for MGM to release the film, and that’s why he went after them in this recent interview. He mentioned,
“We looked these people in the eyeballs and promised we would not be exploitative. That the film would be respectful,” Talking about the fact that the film wouldn’t feature Depp in situations that could be reminiscent of his current legal battles. He went on to add, “I believe that we’ve kept our end of the bargain, but those who came in later should also maintain theirs.”
The Boycott Isn’t Just Affecting Depp
The potential boycott isn’t just affecting Depp’s ability to work, of course, the situation has affected everyone involved in the movie. The film though is about a photographer played by Depp who investigates a mercury poisoning outbreak in Minamata Japan. Depp says that because of the boycott of him, the studio is keeping this important story from being told. In the recent interview, he mentioned,
“This affects those in Minamata and people who experience similar things. And for anything … For Hollywood’s boycott of, erm, me? One man, one actor in an unpleasant and messy situation, over the last number of years?”
Not The Only Boycott He Is Facing
Early last week, we talked about another potential boycott that Depp was facing. He was set to receive a lifetime achievement award from a prestigious film festival in the San Sebastian region of Spain. However, Spanish female filmmakers were not on board with the idea. The group threatened to boycott the film festival because of Depp’s presence.
In court, he won a minor battle against his ex. As his lawyers are now permitted to look into what Heard did with the money she obtained in the original divorce settlement. It’s safe to say that Johnny Depp has seen better days!
