Meghan McCain is mourning the painful loss of her brother, Douglas McCain.

The media personality broke her silence on the shocking news of her brother’s death, which was announced by the McCain Institute on its X page nearly 24 hours ago.

Meghan McCain’s brother was a Navy veteran and American Airlines captain who passed away on May 20, 2026, at the age of 66.

Meghan McCain’s Touching Tribute To Her Brother

The online figure quoted the McCain Institute’s post, which sent condolences to the McCain family over Douglas’ death.

The page described Douglas, the eldest son of Senator John McCain, stressing that he would be remembered as a patriot and friend to many alumni of the institute, campaigns, and Senate staff.

Meghan, in her quoted tweet, admitted that she is deeply saddened to learn of her brother’s “sudden passing”.

She described him as a wonderful man who supported her in all her endeavors, bringing humor, fun, and great conversations into every room.

Meghan concluded her post with an assurance that she will cherish their memories together, and sent prayers to his wife, Ashley, and their two kids, Caroline and Shepp.

Social Media Users Commiserated With The McCain Family

“Oh my friend, I’m so very sorry for your loss. May the lord bless you and your family by giving you strength through this difficult time. Matt and I love you and are with you in spirit and prayer,” George Santos noted under the post.

Another X user stated that Meghan’s loss should teach her how to be more loving and humble, instead of being “hateful and embarrassing” to her family name.

This commenter stressed that, regardless of the politics everyone subscribed to, Douglas was a patriot and pilot who served his country with devotion and deserves respect from everyone.

However, another X subscriber insisted that Meghan’s tribute does not sound like she has any relationship with her late brother.

“This fool will have more words and epistles to write when Trump passes than this little note to his brother, and I am sure the one she had for her dad, too … let me find the one you wrote for Charlie Kirk for comparison purposes,” this commenter shared.

The author’s late brother is the eldest of the McCain siblings and was welcomed into the McCain fold through John’s first wife, Carol McCain’s, previous marriage.

The senator subsequently adopted Douglas and his brother Andrew after marrying Carol in 1965, and they later welcomed a third child named Sidney.

As stated by Oldest, Douglas cemented his name into the family’s famous legacy of military service and joined the United States Navy as a pilot.

Douglas’ sibling, Andrew, chose a different career path from the rest of the family by working for the Hensley Beverage Company as president and COO.

Andrew graduated with an MBA from Vanderbilt University in 1986 and a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics in 1984.

The third child of Andrew and Douglas’ mother (John and Carol’s first child together), Sidney was born in 1966 and is set apart as the only Democrat among her conservative siblings and family.

Meghan, who is the face of the McCain family and shares an impeccable bond with her father, found her niche delivering opposing views on the co-host chair of the daytime television show “The View.”

She often offers a reasonable and approachable perspective to her conservative politics, and labels herself as a woman who is not a fan of labels, boxes, or stereotypes.

Then came John Sidney McCain IV in 1986, who equally served in the force as an MH-60 Seahawk helicopter pilot. According to John, joining the Naval Academy was a way for him to stay connected to his family’s legacy.

Two years later, the family welcomed James McCain, who enlisted in the Marines at 17 years old and served with the 1st Battalion as an infantry rifleman in Iraq.

Bridget McCain joined the McCain family in 1991, becoming the youngest in the fold after Cindy met her in an orphanage during her humanitarian trip in Bangladesh and immediately brought her home.

Bridget was battling a cleft palate and a congenital heart condition when Cindy brought her to America for medical attention.

As stated by PEOPLE, the columnist revealed that while she grew up surrounded by the fame and pomp of her late father’s political career, she actually got to experience growing up in a normal climate.

She raved about her childhood in Phoenix, where the pretty average lifestyle left such a print on her heart that she wishes to recreate it for her two kids.

Meghan explained that her parents sheltered them from the toxicity of the media, and she had to make a list with her husband to ensure that they do not raise spoiled kids.

In her words: “It’s really important to me that they stay as grounded as I possibly can make them. Then I think there’s also respecting my dad’s story and my family’s legacy.”

As a mother, the media personality acknowledged that she has set aside every form of judgment when it comes to parenting because everyone is doing the best they can to bring out the best in their kids.

Meghan and her partner, Ben Domenech, tied the knot on November 21, 2017, in an intimate Western-themed ceremony at her family ranch in Sedona, Arizona.

Sending condolences to Meghan McCain and the rest of her family!
