The court case between Dr. Luke and Kesha has been going on for so long that people may forget everything that went down. Way back in 2014 Kesha filed a lawsuit against the music producer Dr. Luke. Claiming that he was:
“sexually, physically and verbally abusive during the decade-long period they have worked together”
Katy Perry was even dragged into the situation. As there were claims that Dr. Luke also used similar conduct in the time that he worked with Perry as well as Kesha.
Dr. Luke Fought Back
After these allegations were made, Dr. Luke countersued Kesha on defamation charges. The 2 have been fighting this issue for years now. With Dr. Luke taking some court victories over the years. Obviously, the fact that he’s been able to avoid going to prison kind of tells you how things are going for him. Also, In February 2020, a judge found significant claims made by Kesha were essentially false, or just didn’t have enough evidence to prove them, so she was ordered to pay him 400,000 dollars!
Katy Perry Was Actually Key In The Case
Katy Perry wasn’t just an afterthought in the case. Since Kesha did bring up the fact that Perry was sexually assaulted by Dr. Luke in court and Perry subsequently denied the claims, her case started to crumble. That denial by Perry is one of the strongest reasons why she ultimately had to pay up the large sum of cash to Dr. Luke. Now that we are all caught up with how things are going, we can get to the new details!
Dr. Luke Is Now Fighting A New Law That Can Work In Kesha’s Favor
Back in late June, a judge ruled that it was lawful for Kesha to be able to use a strengthened New York free speech law in her defense in this case. The law is essentially meant to help people who are being sued by major corporations. It basically applies to cases exactly like this one where a wealthy party counter sues an alleged victim and just bleeds them out of money, dragging out the case which costs the little guy more than he or she can afford and forces them to settle. Dr. Luke’s team is now appealing the decision.

New Law, Old Case
What Dr. Luke’s team is essentially saying is that the new law doesn’t apply to the old case. Also, they are afraid that if Dr. Luke loses the case, he would have to end up paying Kesha’s legal fees! Which is essentially the bottom-line protection that the law provides. So that people are not driven to literal bankruptcy by the corporations that they try to sue. To not make a long story even longer, this case is a literal mess! The new law could deter Dr. Luke from taking more money from Kesha!
