Camila Cabello is being forced to defend herself after claims of racism surfaced shortly after she performed her new single, “Don’t Go Yet” on TheTonight Show With Jimmy Fallon. The incident followers were referring to was one of her clearly white, male backup dancer being made up to have a darker skin tone than he has. The blatant use of a spray tan that was darker than the dancer’s skin tone triggered many fans watching that night. They wanted to know why the singer insists on making “tone deaf” decisions such as dressing her “dancers in brownface”.

The Latina singer jumped on Twitter to address the haters and make sure that those who watched the performance understand that she would never do what they are accusing her of. “This dude was just supposed to be a white man with a terrible spray tan,” wrote the singer defensively to her followers. "The expectation was not that everyone in the performance needed to be Latin,” she explained. “So the point wasn't to make everyone look Latin either.” The “Havana” singer went on to explain her vision for the video. “The point was to make each person look like an over the top 80's character just like in the video,” and apparently that included “a white dude with a terrible orange spray tan.”

According to a fan of Cabello, the dancer, Dylan Pearce also used his social media to explain that the character was in no way meant to be racist or offensive. “For people messaging me feeling stressed about this character, he is meant to have a bad fake tan. The makeup artist put light concealer around his eyes to express that.” Both Pearce and Cabello seemed to be more defensive than they needed to be considering that risky move they made in the middle of the unrest taking place in regards to race in America. However, Cabello could just be sick of being called a racist.

The former Fifth Harmony group member was accused of along with a few of her other group members of being racist towards Normani, the only black group member. At the same time, an old Tumblr account belonging to Cabello had the N-word was present, and other derogatory terminology that definitely shed a different light on the singer. “I’m sorry from the bottom of my heart,” apologized Cabello in 2019. “Those mistakes don’t represent the person I am or a person I’ve ever been. I only stand and have ever stood for love and inclusivity, and my heart has never, even then, had any ounce of hate or divisiveness.”

The singer went on to share that at the time she was “ignorant” and is “embarrassed”, she then vowed to use her platform “to speak out about injustice and inequality.” Unfortunately, this latest incident has put a setback in the singer's move forward and alleged fight against injustice. Fans also were not feeling her apology then and now it is even worse. Followers believe that Cabello is just looking for an excuse for her dancer and whoever’s idea it was to use “brownface”. Maybe if the singer’s apology did not seem so defensive it would have come off more receptive?
