Not The First Time
As much as millions of supporters around the globe love and enjoy “Love Island,” media scrutiny and cyberbullying are two of the show’s biggest problems, and they seem to get worse with each new season.
In the past three contestants have resulted in suicide after they were bullied by online trolls continuously. The first horrific case happened to beauty queen, Sophie Gradon, who hung herself in her home on June 20, 2018, the same year she spoke about facing cyberbullying on “Radio Aire.”
Another former contestant known as Mike Thalassitis, was founding hanging by a female jogger, with a suicide note by his side. His autopsy revealed that he had consumed alcohol and cocaine before taking his life.
Lastly, the former contestant’s death that shocked the show and its fan base, was Caroline Flack. She was asked to leave the show after reports alleged that she assaulted her boyfriend, Lewis Burton, a report she consistently denied. After she was dropped from the show, there were reports of cyberbullying, which eventually led to her committing suicide on February 15, 2020.
