After weeks of speculation about his future in football, Travis Kelce is finally opening up about why he chose to keep playing.
The Kansas City Chiefs star recently confirmed he will return for another NFL season, putting retirement rumors on hold.
Now, Kelce is sharing what went into the decision, from taking time to reflect after the season to realizing that his love for the game still hasn’t faded.
Travis Kelce Says His Decision To Return Came Together Quickly

Kelce recently addressed the conversation surrounding his future during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show," where he revealed that his decision to return to the Kansas City Chiefs did not drag out for long.
The tight end explained that once he gave himself a short break after the season, the direction he wanted to go became clear.
“Making another move at it, and the Chiefs are making moves,” Kelce said per E! News while discussing his mindset about returning to the field.
According to the star player, the team always knew where he stood throughout the process. “I’m not gonna lie, it was pretty short and brief. The Chiefs knew where I was the entire time on it,” he added.
Kelce noted that stepping away briefly helped him think more clearly about what he wanted.
“You always need to take a step back on it,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of letting emotions settle after a long NFL season.
Kelce Admits His Love For Football Never Went Away

Despite retirement rumors swirling around him, Kelce made it clear that his passion for football remains strong.
During his interview, the 36-year-old reflected on the process of evaluating whether his body and mindset were ready for another season.
“Breathe, let the emotions of the season settle down and see where the body is, and things like that,” he said when describing the reflection period that followed the Chiefs’ campaign.
Ultimately, Kelce realized he still enjoyed the daily grind of professional football. “But man I’m still in love with this game, I’m still in love with going to work, putting on the pads, grinding it out and playing the game,” he explained.
The longtime Chiefs star player believes the best place for him to continue that journey is the same team he has spent his entire career with.
He explained that returning to Kansas City still felt like his “best opportunity,” reinforcing his commitment to the franchise and the locker room he knows well.
Travis Kelce Opens Up About The Thrill Of Big-Game Moments
Kelce has also spoken openly about what he believes makes football so difficult to walk away from.
During a recent episode of the “New Heights” podcast he hosts with his brother Jason, he reflected on the moments that keep players chasing another season.
“It’s just those moments in the big games,” Kelce said while describing the adrenaline that comes with performing under pressure.
For him, those high-stakes environments create a connection with fans and teammates that is hard to replicate anywhere else.
“The feeling of having to rise to the occasion, be there for 70,000 [people] that are all counting on you out there,” he explained.
Kelce added that playoff games and other high-pressure situations are especially powerful experiences.
“Those moments of rising to the occasion in the heat of the battle, in the playoffs and all the big games out there,” he said, adding that it’s “a feeling that I know I’ll never get again.”

As Kelce weighed his options, another legendary tight end offered some perspective.
Former NFL star Rob Gronkowski spoke about the situation during an appearance on “Good Morning America,” sharing advice drawn from his own career decisions.
Gronkowski explained that the most important factor should be Kelce’s own instincts. “The only advice that I would give him, because I’ve been in this situation before, is listen to your gut feeling,” Gronkowski said.
The retired player noted that continuing to play only made sense if the desire to compete remained strong.
“If you truly love the game of football and you feel like you belong out there on the football field, then go back,” he said.
However, he also acknowledged that life after football could be just as rewarding if a player’s heart was no longer in the sport.
“If your heart’s not in it, then you got a lot of opportunities ahead of you,” Gronkowski added.
Travis Kelce Is Already Planning His Life Beyond Football

Even while preparing for another NFL season, Kelce has been building opportunities outside the game.
He has already stepped into entertainment with a role in “Happy Gilmore 2,” expanding his presence beyond the football field. He also teamed up with quarterback Patrick Mahomes to launch a restaurant called 1587 Prime, showing interest in business ventures as well.
Away from work, Kelce is also in the middle of planning his wedding to Taylor Swift, adding another major life milestone to his calendar.
Still, the football icon has a clear idea of what he would like to do when his playing days finally end.
“I want to broadcast when I’m done playing,” Kelce said during a June 2025 episode of “New Heights.” “I wanna be right here and tell them about the game, the old ball coach, ladies and gentlemen.”
