Upon news of the appointment going viral, netizens repeatedly pointed to how the mother of two wasn't qualified for the role.
Erika Kirk had previously been criticized for taking over her late husband's role as CEO of Turning Point USA, and she recently addressed the comments in a video shared on the nonprofit's social media pages.
The TPUSA CEO Replaced Her Late Husband On The Board

Months after Erika Kirk took over as the CEO of the nonprofit her husband, Charlie Kirk, founded, the mother of two has seemingly replaced him on the Air Force Academy's Board of Visitors.
Erika was appointed by President Donald Trump to the new role, making her one of the possible 16 members who make up the board. She is also one of the six members whom the president handpicks.
Other members on the board include politicians like 5th Congressional District Rep. Jeff Crank of Colorado Springs, along with Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., and Chairman Rep. August Pfluger.
They are tasked with making "inquiries into the morale, discipline, curriculum, instruction, physical equipment, fiscal affairs, academic methods, and other matters relating to the Academy."
Prior to Charlie's death, he was actively involved with the board and made several recommendations and inquiries during the last meeting he attended on August 7, 2025.

On social media, Erika's appointment was quickly criticized, with many claiming she wasn't sufficiently qualified to fill the role.
"This Erika Kirk appointment to this Air Force Academy Board happened quietly over the weekend, with no formal announcement," a netizen wrote. "I'm sorry, but being the widow of an influential husband does not qualify you to advise the Defense Department about Air Force standards."
Another user remarked sarcastically, "I'm sure her background as a pageant queen will be a big help."
A third person noted, "Donald Trump has appointed Erika Kirk to help advise the Defense Department on issues affecting the academy. We're in hell."
One X user asked, "What even are her qualifications?" prompting another person to sarcastically respond, "Well, let's see...she was a beauty pageant contestant and an actress. Oh, and she was married to a political activist. So just your standard resume for a military academy board member, really."
The Widow's Latest Role Again Raised Eyebrows About The Amount Of Time She Spends Away From Her Kids

One other netizen also pointed out how the new role would give Erika less time to take care of her kids.
"So she's never been a ceo before, now she's a ceo, and she's on the board of this Air Force deal. How much time does she have w her kids?" the user noted.
One more remarked, "What unique skills does a podcaster's wife have to be appointed to this position? Why is she not home taking care of her young children?"
Another asked, "What possible value can she add to the USAFA? And why isn't she raising her young babies who lost their father?"
Erika Kirk Previously Addressed Comments Calling For Her To Go Back To Being A Stay At Home Mom

News of the appointment comes days after Erika addressed critics who told her to go back to being a stay-at-home mom.
The mother of two responded to the criticism in a video from an event, which was shared on TPUSA's social media accounts.
"I get this question: 'You were a stay-at-home mom, that's what you should go back to doing.' A lot of people don't realize that before I met Charlie, I had my own company, and I still do," Erika remarked.
According to Erika, she also built her business to be self-sufficient, seemingly hinting that this is why she is qualified to step into Charlie's shoes as CEO of his nonprofit.
"I built it in a way that when I got married and had children, it could run on its own. I didn't have to do day-to-day," she added.
The TPUSA CEO Opens Up About Taking On The Mantle Of Her Late Husband, Charlie Kirk

At the time, Erika also revealed the real reason why she chose to step into Charlie's shoes as the CEO of TPUSA, alongside taking charge of other activities he was involved in.
"Unfortunately, I did not see my life being like this," the mother of two remarked. "So, when people are like, 'Oh, so she's now in this role,' I am honoring what the lord has put in front of me, and I'm also honoring my husband's request. And now I have to be the sole provider for my children."
She also stated that she was not doing it for money or fame, contrary to claims from her late husband's pal, Candace Owens, and other netizens.
"This is not a business card opportunity. There is something very Biblical in a woman honoring her husband and stepping up and standing in," Erika shared.
"My focus is on making sure my children are amazing, young, Biblically-aligned little humans, but again, your life is so much greater than just this blip on a radar," she also remarked.
