In the post featuring several images of her in her skiing suits doing what she probably loved most, Vonn explained that she is slowly coming to terms with the fact that her time as number 1 on the leaderboard was soon coming to a close.

She explained in the post on March 6 that no one would have believed that she would even come this far at the beginning of the season, and a mere suggestion of it would have evoked laughter from everyone around her. However, Vonn affirmed that winning the title was her only goal, and she came very close to clinching that.

The athlete referenced her rather humble nature and how she has never been the type to brag about her achievement, noting that she would make an exception, as it will help remind her how much of a champion she is.

"I was on the podium of every single downhill race, including 2 wins. I clawed my way back to #1 in the world after being retired for 6 years with a partial knee replacement, and that alone was an incredible achievement I won't ever forget," the star declared.

She emphasized that she did not plan to win the title to prove anything to anyone; instead, it was because she knew she could, adding that she wished she had gotten the chance to fight till the end.

The 41-Year-Old Expressed How Much Skiing Meant To Her

Vonn's lengthy paragraph also addressed why she got emotional over a crystal trophy. According to her, her tears were directly connected to how much she loved skiing and how much joy she derived from that, especially in this season.

Vonn continued that she also realized that missing out on a title this season does not make the season less extraordinary, nor does it take away her joy from standing at the starting gate or crossing the finish line and seeing #1 next to her name.

"It doesn't take away from the incredible time I had with my team and teammates. Singing and dancing with fans and kids in the stadium. Those memories aren't washed away because of a title," the star added.

She stressed that her tears are just an indication of how much she cares and why she works so hard at skiing, because it is her passion.

Vonn concluded her post, noting that the fate of her future as a ski racer is not decided yet, but she would make do with the memories and privilege to have had an adventure of a lifetime doing what she loved.

The Gold Medalist Narrowly Escaped Leg Amputation

Vonn updated fans with chronicles from the hospital as she gradually recovered from her injury amid multiple surgeries and rehabilitation exercises, which will continue months after her exit from the health facility.

The athlete revealed to her fans that the first two weeks after she was airlifted to the hospital from the skiing competition were the most traumatic for her as she was completely immobile. As noted by The Blast, Vonn had suffered a complex tibia fracture, fractured her fibula head, and her tibia plateau during the crash.

The effects of the crash were damaging to her legs, and it took a swift medical hack from an Olympic-trained and tested doctor to save her legs from being amputated. She revealed that the medic, Dr. Tom Hackett, quickly performed a fasciotomy, where he cut both sides of her legs open and allowed them to breathe.

Vonn noted that she would focus on rehab and slowly progress from wheelchair to crutches in a few weeks, as it will take a year for all of her bones to heal, after which she may decide to go back into surgery and fix her ACL, which tore back in January.
