The dramatic comeback update comes after a frightening accident during the Winter Olympics.

Vonn had already suffered a torn ACL just days before the start of the competition, but still decided to attempt the women's downhill race.

During the event, she lost control early on a steep portion of the course and crashed violently down the mountainside.

The fall was severe enough that she screamed in pain while medical personnel rushed to her aid.

Officials quickly stabilized her, placed her on a stretcher, and airlifted her from the mountain to Ca' Foncello hospital in Treviso, Italy.

The incident left fans around the world fearing the worst for the skiing legend.

After the crash, Lindsey Vonn's injuries turned out to be even more serious than initially believed.

Orthopedic surgeon Nolan Horner from Genesis Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in Chicago later explained that the skier developed compartment syndrome, a dangerous condition caused by swelling that increases pressure inside muscle compartments.

If untreated, the condition can cut off blood flow and cause permanent damage to nerves and tissue. In extreme cases, it can lead to limb loss.

Doctors moved quickly to relieve the pressure by surgically opening the fascia, the connective tissue surrounding the muscle. That emergency intervention restored circulation and ultimately saved her leg.

Over the following weeks, Vonn underwent four surgeries in Italy before returning to the United States for another major operation.

According to NPR, the most recent procedure lasted six hours and focused on rebuilding the damaged area while protecting the skin from infection.

Vonn said, "It's going to be a hard and painful journey, but I am putting all of my energy into it, like I always do."

The skier also told fans she would be stepping back temporarily to focus entirely on her recovery.
