Behind the scenes, negotiations surrounding Gayle King’s future at CBS reportedly involved a major financial adjustment.

According to a television executive from another network who spoke with the Daily Mail, the veteran broadcaster agreed to take what was described as a significant reduction in pay in order to continue hosting CBS Mornings.

The executive did not hold back in criticizing the current state of the network, saying that even without the reported salary reduction, “there's no amount of money that would make me stay there.”

Another CBS insider confirmed to the outlet that King’s salary was cut substantially during negotiations with the network’s new leadership, describing the reduction as “a pretty big shave.”

King’s previous contract was reportedly worth around $15 million annually, a figure sources claim CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss considered too expensive amid the company’s restructuring efforts.

Gayle King’s contract renewal arrives during a period of sweeping changes across CBS News.

Bari Weiss, who stepped into the top editorial role after being hired by Paramount’s David Ellison in October, has been steering a major overhaul of the network’s operations and programming. Several moves since her arrival have sparked debate within the industry.

Among those decisions was promoting King’s former co-host, Tony Dokoupil, to the "CBS Evening News" desk, replacing Maurice DuBois and John Dickerson instead of bringing in an outside anchor. Weiss also appointed longtime journalist Matt Gutman as the network’s chief reporter.

The leadership shake-up has not been without controversy. A widely publicized town hall featuring Erika Kirk reportedly struggled in the ratings, while another decision involving a delayed "60 Minutes" segment about conditions at El Salvador’s CECOT prison drew criticism before eventually airing with additional material.

One television executive suggested that the network’s declining performance explains the aggressive reset.

“With ratings and revenue down, a reimagining makes sense,” the executive said, adding, “It's obvious the executives wanted to move in a different direction.”

Despite the reported pay reduction, King herself has publicly expressed enthusiasm about continuing her role on the morning show.

Speaking with The Wall Street Journal ahead of the contract announcement, King said, “I'm excited about continuing at 'CBS Mornings.'”

She also appeared to acknowledge the lengthy negotiation process and the broader changes happening within the network.

In comments later shared by Weiss, King said, “It took a minute, but we got there. And now that we are here, I am all in.”

While CBS has not disclosed the official terms of her new deal, insiders previously suggested the network had offered King alternative roles, including a potential position as a special correspondent with fewer appearances.

Ultimately, she chose to remain at the center of CBS’s morning programming.

The contract announcement was quickly followed by another notable development within the "CBS Mornings" team.

Shawna Thomas, who has served as the program’s executive producer since 2021, informed staff she would be stepping down from her role.

In a memo obtained by the Daily Mail, Thomas reflected on her time leading the show and the demands of the job.

“I've taken that responsibility of trying to inform, educate, entertain, and make people care about the world around them very seriously, and I know the people here do, too,” she wrote.

She added candidly, “This isn't THE GREAT GOODBYE NOTE. But you should know I've been thinking about this for a while and, frankly, I'm tired y'all.”

Thomas also highlighted her efforts to shape the show during her tenure, telling staff she “tried to make this show something she and everybody on this team want to be a part of. Want to watch. Want to learn from.”

Before joining CBS, Thomas served as the Washington, DC bureau chief for Vice News, overseeing political and policy coverage for "Vice News Tonight."

Even as CBS continues to evolve, insiders say King remains one of the network’s most valuable personalities.

One CBS source suggested that recent developments elsewhere in television may have strengthened King’s position during negotiations. “Gayle is the star of CBS - her hand was strengthened from Anderson Cooper's departure,” the insider said.

CBS News President Tom Cibrowski also emphasized King’s importance to the morning show as he confirmed that both King and her co-host, Nate Burleson, would continue in their roles.

He described the pair as “fantastic partners on the show,” before teasing future changes at the network. “We are excited to continue to evolve CBS Mornings and can't wait for what's to come.”

Cibrowski also praised Thomas following news of her departure, highlighting the demanding nature of morning television.

“Morning television moves fast. It demands grace under pressure, sharp instincts, and the ability to pivot at a moment's notice,” he said.

He continued, “Shawna does all of that with a calm confidence and a great sense of humor. Morning television is also a tight-knit family.”

Cibrowski added that Thomas’s influence extended beyond the screen, noting, “Behind the scenes, Shawna's leadership creates space for collaboration, creativity, and trust, and on screen, that translates into something viewers can feel.”
