The iconic singer's hands were met with handcuffs on Wednesday, around 9:28 p.m. local time in Ventura County by the California Highway Patrol.

The arrest took place after she was spotted driving her BMW incoherently and swerving in and out of traffic. She was then taken into custody and booked for driving under the influence at 3:02 a.m.

According to further reports, officials took steps to determine how intoxicated the "Oops!... I Did It Again" singer was while she was on the wheels. Spears was taken to the hospital to have blood drawn for her blood alcohol content to be determined.

The tests and booking process lasted hours as the singer was released from custody at 6:07 a.m. the next day. The fate of the charges against her would be decided before a judge, as a court date has been scheduled for May 4.

Her manager, Cate Hudson, in a statement to Page Six, addressed the "unfortunate incident," saying it was completely inexcusable.

"Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in a long-overdue change that needs to occur in Britney's life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time," Hudson shared.

Spears' recent arrest reportedly stemmed from a series of issues she has been dealing with, particularly following the release of her ex-husband's memoir, "You Thought You Knew."

A source close to the singer revealed that she did not just start behaving differently, in their words, "Her behavior has become increasingly erratic in recent months. She goes from being fine to not being fine."

Speaking further, they disclosed the trigger that sent her into the downward spiral, explaining, "It was the Kevin book that really sent her over the edge, and it's been downhill from there. It really impacted her emotionally." They added that the iconic singer felt like she gave Federline everything, yet he "exploited her."

"He used her; he wanted to ruin her," the insider said, adding, "And that was a really hard pill to swallow; it absolutely killed her that someone would want to damage her so much."

Federline's book had so many claims concerning his ex's behavior and use of controlled substances. He penned allegations that she used cocaine while she was breastfeeding and also drank while pregnant. Spears' arrest comes five months after the memoir was released.

Spears and Federline tied the knot shortly after meeting in a club in 2004. The marriage came shortly after the first annulment of her first marriage to Jason Alexander, which lasted only fifty-five hours.

They welcomed their first son, Sean, in 2005 and their youngest son, Jayden James, in the following year. Months after Jayden was born, the hitmaker filed for divorce, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for their split.

Federline, however, claimed that he was totally blindsided by her decision to pull the plug on their union, while admitting that their marriage was on rocky ground at the time.

The Blast previously shared that upon finalizing their divorce in 2007, the pair was granted joint physical custody of the boys, but they came up with other arrangements that worked best around their busy schedules.

The Blast covered details of the "You Thought You Knew" book and areas Federline shone light on. Besides his relationship with the singer and her ordeal with alcohol and drugs, the father of five revealed his experiences as a father to his sons with Spears and the three children he has from other relationships.

He previously also expressed his hopes that readers would acknowledge that he stepped up as a father when he needed to and did everything he could to give his children a normal life.

"He wanted to write the book to shed light on what his life was really like behind the scenes because so many people thought he was a deadbeat and he wasn't," a source revealed.

Despite these heartfelt revelations about his intentions for the memoir, many fans called him out on social media, claiming he wrote the book to make money, as child support funds from Spears ceased since Jayden turned 18.

Others claimed that it was a revenge move in response to Spears' own memoir nearly two years ago.

Almost a decade ago, the iconic singer was charged with one count of hit and run, which caused property damage, and one count of driving without a valid California driver's license. The incident took place in the San Fernando Valley in 2007 in a private parking lot.

Spears was accused of hitting a person's vehicle and running away. The hearing was set for the misdemeanor charges, which carried a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. Spears was notified via post, which meant she did not have to attend.

Last year, she also broke federal aviation regulations, for which she received a warning from airport authorities. The Blast reported that she lit a cigarette on the plane and did not put it out until flight attendants stepped in.

Spears told her own side of the story, explaining why she did not feel odd requesting for a cigarette. She admitted that certain airlines have strict rules against smoking, but after she saw the drink holders and had some vodka, she got excited and decided to take a puff.
