Monroe Says She’s Not Focused On Being A ‘Match Of The Year’ Wrestler In WWE
Blake Monroe has also been making waves inside the ring since arriving in WWE NXT last year. Previously competing under the name Mariah May in All Elite Wrestling, Monroe quickly became a standout in NXT, even capturing the NXT Women’s North American Championship for several months.
Despite previously earning praise for her in-ring performances, Monroe recently revealed that she isn’t necessarily focused on being known as a “Match of the Year” wrestler in her new chapter.
Blake Monroe Says She’s Always Asking ‘What Can I Do Better?’
Speaking on the “NotSam Wrestling” podcast, she explained that her goal is to continue improving and developing new aspects of her craft.
“I wouldn’t call myself a ‘Match of the Year’ wrestler,” Monroe said. “I appreciate when people say that, but for me – I’m always like, ‘What can I do better?’ And one of the big reasons I wanted to come to WWE was just because the women’s division is so deep.”
Monroe Says WWE’s Women’s Division Was Key To Her Move
She added that the strength of WWE’s women’s division was a major factor in her decision to make the move. “They really put an emphasis on their women,” Monroe explained.
Along with competing on television, Monroe said she was eager to train at the WWE Performance Center, where she hopes to become a more well-rounded performer. “I knew there were areas in my work that I wasn’t happy with, and there are areas that I’m naturally good at,” she continued.
Blake Monroe’s Title Reign Ended In Controversial Fashion
Blake Monroe also made headlines late last year after her NXT Women’s North American Championship reign came to an unexpected and controversial end. Her December match against Thea Hail reportedly concluded with a pinfall that wasn’t originally planned.
Despite the apparent mix-up, WWE NXT ultimately chose to move forward with the result and allowed the finish to stand. Monroe has not yet reclaimed the championship since losing the title in that match.
