Harry Styles Breaks Silence On His Liam Payne Grief Process

Harry Styles has turned a dark moment in his life into a learning curve.

The Grammy winner finally revealed the impact of Liam Payne's passing on him and how he fell short of public expectations concerning grief, although he went about things the best way he could.

Liam Payne was a member of the defunct "One Direction" group alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson, who were formed in London by Simon Cowell in 2010.

The singer explained in his interview with Apple Music that he has not been able to move on from Payne's passing, and he struggles with even talking about it publicly.

"I think there was a period when he passed away where I really struggled with kind of like acknowledging how strange it is to have people kind of like part of your grief in a way," he explained.

Styles continued that, as against public perception, he actually had very strong feelings about his pal's death, but he was also aware that people wanted him to be public and vocal about his emotions, and he could not do that.

He stressed in the interview that it was very shattering to lose a friend who was like him in so many ways, especially when all that friend wanted to be was great. Styles had joined the rest of his former bandmates in November 2024 to lay Payne to rest in London.

Styles did learn one or two things from the unfortunate situation, as he revealed that he was forced to take a closer look at his life and really ask himself the tough questions, like what does he want to do with his life, and does he want to be remembered.

The award-winning musician concluded to Apple Music's Zane Lowe that he understood at that moment that the best way to honor their friends who passed away is to make the most out of every moment and live life to the fullest.

The singer noted that Payne was a very special person to him, and thinking about his death was always a sad reminder. Last February, a court dismissed manslaughter charges for three out of the five people suspected to be connected to Payne's tragic death.

Since the group of five went their separate ways in 2016, The Blast shared that communication between them has significantly waned, but things have since picked up since Payne died.

Sources close to the former bandmates revealed that Payne's death was a wake-up call for all the boys because before that, the calls were sparse, and they did not maintain any close friendships.

Now that they lost an integral member of the group, the insider stated that they have started checking in on each other more often and they have gotten closer than ever.

Before Payne passed, the former bandmates were reportedly in talks to do one last reunion concert, and now that he is gone, they still intend to carry out the plan, only that it will be a night of tribute to his memory.

The boys' presence at Payne's funeral service marked the first time in nearly a decade that they reunited in public.

Payne's death happened after he fell from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Argentina. As noted by The Blast, new sources claimed that pictures of the singer's body were captured on a wooden deck at the hotel.

Before his fall, eyewitnesses claimed that he was acting very erratically at the hotel lobby in the afternoon and even went as far as destroying his laptop, prompting his friends to carry him to his room.

Payne's death occurred nearly a year after his mother, Karen Payne, and the rest of their family registered their concern about his health, which led to him being hospitalized and also canceling his tour.

He was also vocal about his mental health struggles and stints at rehabs. Payne informed the public in 2023 that he got an official diagnosis after he spent time at a clinic in the United States, and he felt he had hit rock bottom. 

In 2024, PEOPLE shared that the media personality was remorseful about a 2022 comment he made about his former bandmates during his appearance on the "Impaulsive" podcast.

Payne had criticized the four other guys, but eventually explained that those words came from a frustrated place where he was pissed about his career and was looking for whom to blame.

He praised them for being there when it mattered most, but that did not mean they did not have some toxic energy in their interaction, according to his confession in 2019.

Payne stressed that half the time, he carried a significant amount of anger towards his former bandmates, but alcohol offered him an escape from how he felt.
