Andy Dick Reveals Shocking Diagnosis After Near-Death Collapse

Andy Dick is opening up about a terrifying health scare that nearly cost him his life. 

Months after collapsing in Los Angeles and being revived with Narcan, the comedian is finally sharing what really happened and what doctors discovered afterward. 

From his heart-stopping to troubling brain scan results, the 60-year-old is confronting the reality of his decades-long addiction battle while attempting to rebuild in sobriety.

Andy Dick first detailed the frightening ordeal during an appearance on “Howie Mandel Does Stuff," where he didn’t sugarcoat the severity of the moment. 

Describing the incident, he said he was “Purple, not breathing,” and explained that the only thing he remembers is waking up in the ambulance.

He also confirmed that his heart had stopped. When asked whether he experienced any kind of near-death imagery, he replied bluntly, “There were no bright lights.”

The medical emergency marked another chapter in a long public struggle with substance abuse. 

Over the years, Dick has faced repeated legal troubles and rehab stints tied to addiction. 

This time, however, the consequences appear far more severe.

During the same interview, Andy Dick disclosed troubling findings from his medical evaluation. 

After the collapse, doctors conducted a scan of his head. According to him, it revealed “about five to seven holes” in his brain.

When Howie Mandel asked if he meant “lesions,” he clarified, “That’s not the word I remember they used.” 

The “NewsRadio” star added that the damage has affected his memory.

Although he did not offer technical medical explanations, he made it clear that the results were serious enough to notice cognitive changes.

Dick also shared that he is currently living in a sober community with strict guidelines. 

“They drug test you,” he said. “I’m not high. I don’t take pills. I don’t do anything except coffee.”

Dick was also candid about how challenging sobriety can be. “I get bored easily,” he admitted, acknowledging that the explanation “sounds dumb.” He went on to say, “I like fun. I like a little bit danger.”

Mandel pushed back, suggesting that such a way of thinking didn’t safeguard the career Dick had built. 

The 60-year-old responded, “It’s not like I’m out there like, ‘I’m gonna wake up and throw it away today,’” before conceding, “[but] sometimes I do actually have that thought.”

Beyond career concerns, Dick pointed to family as his biggest reason to try to remain sober. 

He is a father to Lucas, Meg, and Jacob, and he revealed that a third grandchild is on the way.

“I have to, buddy. I just have to,” he said during the conversation, before asking, “Do you know how hard it is for me?”

Shortly after the interview aired on YouTube, fans trooped to the comments section to air their thoughts. 

On one hand, some fans praised Mandel for his support towards Andy Dick and for holding the actor’s people accountable for what happened.

“I love Howie for holding Andy’s people around him accountable. Andy is a human being and not just a show piece to get your documentary or podcast. Good for you Howie for standing your ground and calling it out!” one fan wrote.

A second person commented, “That’s what’s up Howie!!!! Hold his ‘people’ accountable.” 

On the other hand, some offended fans slammed Mandel, with many noting that he degraded and was rude to Dick.

“Andy is doing good now give him grace! Would like to have heard more about Andy and stop degrading him geez!!,” one person shared.

Another wrote, “Be nice to Andy! You are being rude Howie wow never saw you acting like you're above someone. Disappointed.”

In December 2025, TMZ obtained a video showing Dick slumped over on cement stairs outside a building in Hollywood during the day. 

His signature glasses were seen on the ground in front of him.

Witnesses rushed to help. One person screamed for him to “wake up” while others called for emergency assistance. 

Someone nearby shouted for Narcan, the medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, and it appeared to be administered at the scene.

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles City Fire Department confirmed paramedics responded to an overdose involving a 59-year-old man. 

According to the report, he was not transported to a hospital. Later that night, Dick reportedly shared that he was alive and relieved, though he declined to go into detail about what substances were involved.
