During a candid new interview released shortly after his Mardi Gras arrest in New Orleans, the “Transformers” actor went on a surprising tangent, revealing he has carried a decades-long grudge against the former MLB star stemming from repeated autograph rejections when he was a kid. Shia LaBeouf also addressed the arrest directly, insisted he doesn’t believe he needs rehab, and reflected on what he says are deeper personal struggles tied to anger and ego.
Shia LaBeouf Recalls Childhood Autograph Rejection That Sparked Lifelong Grudge
During the interview, Shia LaBeouf unexpectedly pivoted to a personal story from his childhood, revealing a lingering resentment tied to failed attempts to get an autograph from former MLB star Mike Piazza. “I remember trying to get my Piazza's autograph, motherf-cker. You know what I mean? For my whole life, Mike Piazza,” he said.
He explained that he attended Los Angeles Dodgers games through a Big Brothers program and regularly waited with other kids in hopes of meeting players. According to LaBeouf, many athletes would stop to sign, but Piazza never did. “Every day this guy, bro… Brent Butler always signed. Hideo Nomo always signed. Mike Piazza. Just the cold heart. Mike Piazza, you're a b-tch, bro,” he continued.
LaBeouf estimated the rejection happened repeatedly over time. “How many times do you think he rejected signing?" the host asked, to which LaBeouf responded, "Every day, bro… 90 times, probably, rejected me 90 times.”
He said the experience ultimately shaped how he interacts with fans today. “So what it did was, I'm gonna sign them all…" he said, referring to fans asking him for autographs. "Not unless I'm with my kid, or I'm eating some food, or I'm chasing some a-s.”

Actor Addresses New Orleans Bar Brawl And Rejects Rehab Narrative
Shia LaBeouf also discussed the February altercation that led to his arrest outside R Bar in New Orleans during Mardi Gras celebrations.
“My behavior… I gotta deal with that. Does that mean I gotta go to rehab again? I'm just not into it, bro,” the actor said. “I don't think my answers are there. I don't. I really, genuinely, don't. If I genuinely did, I'd go. I don't think I have a drinking problem.”
Instead, he suggested his issues stem from something else entirely. “I think I have a different problem, and I'm gonna address it… I think I have a small-man complex," Shia LaBeouf said.

Shia LaBeouf further clarified that he believes his struggles are rooted more in personality traits than substance use, saying, “I think my issues stem more from anger and ego than from drinking.”
Despite defending aspects of his behavior, LaBeouf did acknowledge responsibility for the physical confrontation itself. “I am wrong for touching anyone ever,” he said. "And that's the end of my statement on this whole sh-t.”
Incident Began During Mardi Gras Night Out
The legal situation stems from an early-morning altercation in New Orleans’ Faubourg Marigny neighborhood on February 17.
Authorities responded to reports of a disturbance outside a Royal Street business, where Shia LaBeouf was allegedly involved in a physical confrontation with multiple individuals. Police also claimed he used homophobic slurs during the incident.
After receiving medical attention, Shia LaBeouf was arrested and later released the same day before returning to Bourbon Street festivities.
Shia LaBeouf's Second Arrest Issued After Additional Charge Filed
Shortly after the interview was released, Shia LaBeouf was taken back into custody after authorities issued a new warrant tied to the same February 17 altercation. He was charged with one additional misdemeanor count of simple battery, according to reports.
His attorney confirmed that LaBeouf voluntarily surrendered after the warrant was issued. “No regular person would be required to post over $100,000 in bonds and be jailed two separate times for one misdemeanor incident,” LaBeouf's attorney, Sarah Chervinsky, said. “Just as he does not deserve preferential treatment, Mr. LaBeouf also does not deserve to be treated more harshly by the police and courts just because he is a public figure.”
Shia LaBeouf ultimately posted bond and was released.
