Inside Michael B. Jordan’s Emotional Actor Awards Victory

Michael B. Jordan walked into the 2026 Actor Awards as a nominee and walked out as one of the night’s biggest stories. 

The 39-year-old star delivered a career-defining moment when he clinched the top acting prize, beating out some of Hollywood’s most celebrated names. 

The emotional victory didn’t stand alone, either. His film “Sinners” also dominated, turning what many expected to be a predictable ceremony into a powerful and deeply personal night for Jordan.

Michael B. Jordan took home Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role, beating out a competitive lineup that included Timothée Chalamet for “Marty Supreme,” Leonardo DiCaprio for “One Battle After Another,” Ethan Hawke for “Blue Moon,” and Jesse Plemons for “Bugonia.”

Chalamet, who had already secured victories at the Critics Choice Awards and Golden Globe Awards, was widely viewed as the frontrunner. Instead, it was Jordan who emerged victorious.

The actor appeared overwhelmed as he stared down at his trophy, hands covering his face and mouth open in disbelief. 

Inside The Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall, the reactions were just as powerful. Chalamet stood and applauded alongside co-star Gwyneth Paltrow, while Jordan’s mother, Donna, looked stunned before grabbing her son’s shoulders in celebration.

Presenter Viola Davis also seemed taken aback when she opened the envelope, her jaw visibly dropping before announcing Jordan’s name and shouting in celebration.

Michael B. Jordan’s acceptance speech quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the night.

Turning to his mother, he said, per the Daily Mail, “Mom, thank you for driving me back and forth to New York, when we didn’t have enough money to go through the Holland Tunnel.” 

The “Creed” star also admitted the win caught him off guard. “I don’t even know where to begin. I wasn’t expecting this at all,” he said. 

Jordan revealed he was honored and privileged to be nominated in categories with movie stars and people he loved.

“I love, and I love their work and what they contribute to our craft and just rise to has been unbelievable. So, thank you for welcoming me in and making me feel seen,” he added. 

Jordan also made sure to go down memory lane. He recalled his early days as an actor and getting his SAG-AFTRA card. 

Seeing how far he had come, the emotional Hollywood star noted per PEOPLE, “That kid from Newark Jersey is standing here right now.”

Besides thanking his mom for the sacrifices she made toward his career, the actor also praised Ryan Coogler, for giving him the opportunity to showcase his talent. Jordan revealed that the director created a “safe place for us to find the truth.”

In his closing words, Jordan noted, “I feel the love and support that you’ve always given me and encouraged me to go on and do my best. So I just want to say thank you.”

Michael B. Jordan’s night grew even bigger when “Sinners” secured Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

The Ryan Coogler-written and directed horror film edged out “Frankenstein,” “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme,” and “One Battle After Another.” 

The story follows twin brothers who return home seeking a fresh start, only to confront a terrifying force in the form of vampires.

Jordan portrayed both brothers, the serious twin Elijah “Smoke” Moore and the more lighthearted twin Elias “Stack” Moore, showcasing his range in dual roles.

Delroy Lindo collected the award and spoke on behalf of the cast, which included names like Miles Caton, Wunmi Mosaku, and Hailee Steinfield.

Jordan’s win and emotional speech has since been shared across various social media platforms, igniting a wave of mixed reactions from fans. 

On X, formerly known as Twitter, many users praised the actor for his prowess.

“He’s such a great actor and to play two roles at that. Phenomenal,” one person wrote underneath The Hollywood Reporter’s tweet.

A second person shared, “Man I’m so happy for him. MBJ is a good dude well deserved,” while a third shared, “They doubted him. He stayed consistent. Now Michael B Jordan getting the flowers in real time. Respect the grind.”

On the other hand, some users weren’t impressed with the win, with many noting that Jordan didn’t deserve it. 

“Not even top 3 in his category. Can we please start being serious instead of just giving it to anyone of color,” one person shared in response to a post by Discussing Film. 

Another commented, “Lmfao. What a joke. He’s like 4th best in his category,” while a third shared, “I watched Sinners and there’s nothing special in his acting. Did I miss something? And he acted the twin 100% the same.”
