Morgan Freeman isn’t holding back. During a recent television appearance, the legendary Oscar winner delivered a blunt and unexpected political critique that quickly made headlines. What began as a routine interview promoting his latest project turned into a fiery commentary on leadership, democracy, and the future of the country, with Morgan Freeman openly questioning how Donald Trump returned to the presidency despite his legal troubles.
Morgan Freeman Asks If He Can Use Profanity Before Criticizing Trump

While appearing on MSNBC’s "The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell," Morgan Freeman paused mid-conversation to ask a question that immediately shifted the tone of the interview: "Can I use any profanity?"
After O’Donnell assured him he could speak freely, Freeman didn’t hesitate to voice his opinion. "We have somebody sitting in the White House who's leading us down a sh-thole," he said. "I can't personally understand how a convicted felon, convicted, 34 felonious... is that a word? Counts of wrongdoing gets to be president. How do you do that?"
His remarks referenced Donald Trump’s 2024 New York hush-money trial, in which the president was found guilty on 34 counts related to falsifying business records.

Morgan Freeman continued pressing the issue, expressing disbelief that Trump assumed office after the ruling. “How do you do that?” Freeman asked. “When say, ‘Well, he was…' I don’t care. That ruling went down before he stepped into the Oval Office. So it just doesn’t make sense to me.”
Trump has denied wrongdoing and has previously described the conviction as a “rigged decision.”
Morgan Freeman Compares Current Political Climate To Germany In The 1930s

Although Morgan Freeman was initially on the show to promote his Prime Video project "The Gray House," the conversation turned toward broader concerns about the direction of the country. “I’m constantly reminded of Germany in 1935,” he told O’Donnell. “What was happening there? The brownshirts, those people that are marching through, particularly Berlin, and rounding up people, putting them in boxcars and sending them off.”
The "Now You See Me, Now You Don't" actor added, “Now this administration wants to build large detention centers," pointing to the administration’s push to expand immigration detention centers.
The move has sparked growing controversy, with critics sounding the alarm over alleged conditions inside some of the facilities. One case that drew particular attention involved detainee Fernando Viera Reyes, whose situation highlighted concerns about medical care behind detention walls.
Reports Of ICE Detention Conditions Previously Sparked National Outrage

When U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained Viera Reyes, he said his fears went beyond deportation, as he was also battling prostate cancer. “It’s one thing being healthy and going through that, but now there’s no medical attention,” Viera Reyes said. “I talked to guys who had been in detention. One guy said you’re not going to make it. You’re going to suffer.”
Viera Reyes later became one of seven detainees who filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration on November 12, alleging inhumane conditions at the privately operated California City Detention Facility. The legal action, supported by the ACLU, California Collaborative for Immigrant Justice, Prison Law Office, and Keker Van Nest & Peters, accused the facility of punishing conditions, enforced isolation, neglect of people with disabilities, denial of legal access, and severely inadequate medical treatment.
The legal filing also included an emergency request related to Viera Reyes’ health, highlighting allegations that the medical treatment he received while in custody was dangerously insufficient.
Morgan Freeman Urges Americans To Vote To Change The Country’s Direction

Morgan Freeman ultimately pointed to voting as the most direct path toward change.
“I don’t know what I would say to young people, other than if you are at all aware of where we’re headed, where we are right now and where we’re headed," the actor said. "And if you don’t agree with it, there is one sure way to change the direction of our country: Vote.”
The next presidential election is scheduled to be on November 7, 2028.
