Robert Carradine’s cause of death has been confirmed just days after the actor’s unexpected death on February 23. Following the news of his passing, it was publicly revealed that he lived with bipolar disorder for several years.

Fans flooded social media with condolences for the star, including his former onscreen daughter, Hilary Duff.

According to TMZ, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has officially ruled Robert Carradine’s death a suicide.

The manner of the “Revenge of the Nerds” star’s death is listed as suicide, with the official cause of death confirmed as sequelae of anoxic brain injury and hanging. Carradine died due to lack of brain oxygen.

The Actor’s Family Issued A Statement Following His Death

The day of his death, the Carradine family issued an official statement confirming he took his own life, while noting his ongoing struggle with bipolar disorder.

"In a world that can feel so dark, Bobby was always a beacon of light to everyone around him. We are bereft at the loss of this beautiful soul and want to acknowledge Bobby’s valiant struggle against his nearly two-decade battle with bipolar disorder," the statement read, per Deadline.

Carradine Initially Sparked Concern After Abandoning Movie Set

Shortly before his death, Carradine was working on what would be his last project, titled "The Driver," AKA "Driving into Darkness."

Per director Connie Lamothe, she was concerned about the actor when he didn’t attend a table read for the film, telling TMZ she noticed concerning behavior back in January when Carradine went "radio silent."

A close friend of Carradine, who was also working on the film, told Lamothe to give the “Lizzie McGuire” star some space due to his mental health struggles in the hopes that he would return on his own accord.

Hilary Duff Posted A Heartfelt Tribute To Her Former Onscreen Dad

In a post on Instagram, Duff offered kind words of remembrance alongside photos of the two on set of the hit Disney channel series.

“This one hurts,” her caption began. “It’s really hard to face this reality about an old friend. There was so much warmth in the McGuire family and I always felt so cared for by my on-screen parents.”

“I’ll be forever grateful for that. I’m deeply sad to learn Bobby was suffering. My heart aches for him, his family, and everyone who loved him,” she continued.

She wasn’t the only former “Lizzie McGuire” co-star to pay tribute, as Jake Thomas, who played Carradine’s son and Duff’s brother, also shared a heartfelt message.

"My heart hurts today. I was fortunate to know Bobby for most my life. And he was one of the coolest guys you could ever meet. Funny, pragmatic, sometimes cranky, always a little eccentric," Thomas’s message read in part.

"Good moments, challenging moments, and lots of laughs between. I looked up to him growing up. And later in life, I came to realize he thought I was pretty neat, too. So I guess I was doing something right in his eyes," his message continued.

"Rest easy, Bobby. Love you, 'Jaker,'" Thomas added.

Robert Carradine Struggled With His Mental Health For Decades

According to NBC News, Carradine's brother and manager, legendary actor Keith Carradine, confirmed in a statement that his younger brother had "succumbed to bipolar disorder after fighting it for almost 20 years."

Carradine was a prominent member of the prolific Carradine acting dynasty. In addition to the popular acting credits like “Revenge of the Nerds” and “Lizzie McGuire,” he also appeared in "The Long Riders," "The Big Red One," and "Wavelength."

Carradine's daughter, actress Ever Carradine, shared an Instagram tribute reflecting on her father's death, which included a full photo collection of them together throughout her life.

"My dad died today. My sweet, funny dad, who’s only 20 years older than I am, who never missed an opportunity to drive me to the airport or tell me how much he loved my homemade salad dressing, is gone," she wrote in part.

"If you knew my dad, you know he’s the guy that’s always there. Invite him to dinner? He’s in. Kid’s Little League game in Simi Valley, just tell him what time," she added.
