Melania Trump's fashion choice for Saturday's Governors Dinner in Washington, D.C., has sparked a fresh wave of criticism.
The event was described as a black-tie gala, yet the first lady paired a black neck blouse with metallic silver trousers.
As such, many netizens labeled Melania Trump's outfit "inappropriate," as it did not fully align with the event's formal dress code.
Why The First Lady Was Criticized For Her Fashion Choice

Melania Trump has everyone talking about her outfit at the Governors' Dinner, but not for the right reasons.
The event was held in Washington, D.C., where the first lady appeared alongside her husband, Donald Trump, who opted for a traditional black tuxedo and black bow tie in line with the event's dress code.
Melania, however, chose a long-sleeved black tie-neck blouse from Dolce & Gabbana, pairing it with metallic silver trousers featuring intricate designs from the same brand.
She completed the look with metallic silver heels by Christian Louboutin and large diamond earrings.
The contrasting choice stood out, not only for the unconventional trousers, but also because many believe women should wear a floor-length gown to events with a black-tie dress code.
This became even more apparent in photographs from the event, which showed other female attendees dressed in gowns.

It came as little surprise that several netizens criticized her choice of attire after photos from the event went viral.
One wrote, "I've said it before, I'll say it again, someone needs to replace her stylist. Black tie doesn't mean disco ready," while another commented, "Inappropriate for black tie."
A third commented, "What the f-ck is she wearing?!!! Glitter pants to a major professional dinner at the White House? She looks like she's going out for wine night with the other mafia wives."
One more person wrote, "Looks like she's going on a picnic. How disgraceful."
Conversely, some netizens threw their support behind Melania, claiming she looked stunning in the attire.
"I love how she is on these pants for a dinner. They are beautiful, and she dresses up and rocks everything she puts on," one wrote.
"I love the outfit, I wouldn't wear it to a black tie function, but she's literally first lady and can wear whatever she wants," a second commented.
" Absolutely love the outfit!!! As always, she is stunning," one more user remarked.
Melania Trump Recently Donated Her Second Inaugural Gown To The Smithsonian

The criticism follows just days after Melania Trump donated her 2025 inaugural gown to the Smithsonian Institution.
The sleeveless off-white silk crepe dress featured elegant black silk gazar trim and was originally styled with a 1955 diamond brooch by Harry Winston, worn on a black ribbon choker.
The gesture also marked the second inaugural gown she has contributed to the prestigious collection, having previously donated the dress she wore for the 2017 inauguration of Trump's first tenure.
During the handover, Melania also spent a few moments reflecting on the design of the outfit, and interestingly, included a reference to her critically panned documentary named after her.
"Personally, I relish the entire design process, from start to finish," the mother of one said, per The Guardian. "It takes time, it's slow, but the end result is always magical. If you had a chance to see my new film, Melania, you are well aware of what it took to bring this technical marvel to life."
The First Lady's Critically Panned Documentary Beat Box Office Prediction, But Is Yet To Break Even

Earlier in the month, it was reported that "Melania," the documentary, exceeded box-office expectations.
The project, which Amazon acquired for a reported $40 million, was initially projected to earn around $5 million during its opening weekend.
Instead, it went on to generate more than $7 million at U.S. cinemas, according to the BBC.
The film chronicled the first 20 days leading up to her husband's inauguration for a second presidential term, but told from the First Lady's perspective.
This included critical meetings, private conversations, and never-before-seen environments, as well as how Melania navigated the complexities of her family's return to the White House.
Since its debut, the film has been widely criticized by both professional reviewers and social media users.
Although it surpassed initial projections, it still faces an uphill battle to break even, having earned just over $16 million at the global box office.
The First Lady Gushed Over The Project Despite Negative Reviews

Despite receiving negative reviews, Melania expressed pride in her documentary in a post shared ahead of its global launch.
The first lady branded the film a "Historic Moment," noting, "I am deeply humbled to have been surrounded by an inspiring room of friends, family, and cultural iconoclasts at the White House last night."
"Each of these individuals each brought their unique vision to the world, making a lasting impression," Melania continued. "Our personal stories endure time and serve as a reminder of our mutual obligation to one another."
