A new report from ESPN states that 1587 Sneakers is alleging trademark infringement, citing the similarity between the names of its business and that of Kelce and Mahomes' upscale Kansas City eatery, 1587 Prime.

The two superstar athletes first opened the steakhouse at Loews Kansas City Hotel on Mahomes' 30th birthday in 2025, combining their numbers to create the restaurant's name.

ESPN explained that the potential legal matter centers on the "unregistered rights that the sneaker company" has, given that it filed its trademark application in 2025, despite beginning to make sales in April 2023.

At the time of this publication, 1587 Sneakers' trademark application is still under review.

Mahomes and Kelce, meanwhile, filed a trademark for their Midwest eatery in December 2023.

However, both companies' trademarks are in different categories. The NFL players' paperwork falls under the bar and restaurant sector, and the shoewear company's falls under clothing.

Trademark attorney Josh Gerben of Gerben IP (who's not affiliated with either party in this case) spoke with ESPN about the matter and seemed to express doubt about the life of the sneaker company's lawsuit.

"I think it's a tough case for the sneaker company," he said. "Trademarks can coexist in different industries. ... Given that the marks are essentially identical here, is a restaurant and a shoe company too close? Are consumers likely to be confused in thinking they are affiliated with one another?"

The alleged trademark infringement isn't just about the name. In the lawsuit, 1587 Sneakers also claimed that Mahomes and Kelce's steakhouse sells merchandise with the number combination plastered on it.

The company's owners claim their business has been contacted by "scores of consumers" who believed it was related to Mahomes and Kelce's restaurant.

"From the onset, we have communicated a sincere belief that there is room for mutual respect and understanding," the sneaker company's lawyer said in a statement. "That belief has not changed, and we continue to hope to resolve this matter amicably."

Ultimately, 1587 Sneakers is asking Mahomes and Kelce to stop using "1587," claiming it causes significant confusion among consumers.

Mahomes and Kelce's labor of love has been open for a few months, and in previous social media videos promoting the business, the pair expressed genuine excitement about the public finally being able to set foot indoors.

"What’s better than to break bread with people over good food, good drinks, cool vibe?" Kelce said in one of the posts before describing the food as "mind-blowing."

Mahomes said the steakhouse has the "Kansas City feel" that locals know and love, adding, "This is different, and I think the city is going to love it."

The nearly 10,000-square-foot restaurant, located inside the Lowe's Hotel, features two levels, private dining rooms, a meat display, and a chef's kitchen. 1587 Prime is also home to one of Missouri's largest wine collections.

In addition to battling this recent lawsuit during the off-season, Kelce is likely thinking about his future in the league.

According to a previous report from The Blast, many believe Kelce's time in the NFL has come to an end after the Chiefs failed to make the playoffs in 2025.

Rob Gronkowski is among the believers, saying, "My gut tells me about Travis Kelce is that he will not be back next year."

"He has had a significant career, Kay. He has had an excellent year once again this year," he added. "In the end, overall, where the Kansas City Chiefs are with Patrick Mahomes getting hurt, with everything else that's going on in Travis Kelce's life, I think this is his last year."
