According to reports from the course, Vonn had sped over a hill before losing control and crashing into one of the plastic markers lining the track. Her right leg appeared to strike the ground first, sending up a cloud of powder as she was violently thrown forward.

“She was in a lot of pain at the time,” Spallinger explained. “I rushed to begin treatment on site and stabilized her. Given the nature of her injury, we decided to arrange for her to be transferred to the hospital by rescue helicopter.”

He added that Vonn needed to be calmed as they waited for the helicopter to arrive, with her physical therapist stepping in to help keep her steady amid the agony.
