Jonas and Chopra tied the knot in December 2018 and welcomed their first child, daughter Malti Marie, in January 2022 via a surrogate. Shortly after, Chopra faced backlash, with people accusing the actress of using a surrogate and "renting" a womb for vanity's sake.

In an interview with British Vogue in 2023, the actress explained that she had "medical complications," which was the reason they had to use a surrogate. "This was a necessary step, I was in a position where I could do this," adding that their surrogate was a lovely woman who took care of their baby for six months.

Malti was born in January 2022, three months shy of her expected April due date.

Nick Jonas' Daughter Had To Be Resuscitated

Jonas was a guest on the "On Purpose with Jay Shetty" podcast on February 4, where he opened up about his daughter's difficult birth and what the first few weeks were like for him and his wife as new parents.

"She came to the world under sort of very intense circumstances, which I've not really talked about ever," the 33-year-old singer shared. As soon as they got the call that their daughter was going to be born three months premature, they immediately headed to the hospital.

Malti was born weighing 1 lb. 11 ounces and had purple skin. "These angels at the NICU, kind of resuscitated her in that moment and got her taken care of really quickly and intubated and everything else," Jonas added.

For three-and-a-half months, the husband and wife took 12-hour shifts caring for their newborn in the hospital while she recovered. Malti also needed six blood transfusions before she was well enough to be sent home.

"I could still sort of like, smell it. There's always visceral things. It was both comforting and frightening to be there every day," he added.

While it was Jonas' first time speaking publicly about his daughter's birth, Chopra previously opened up about it to British Vogue in 2023. The actress recalled her baby being smaller than her hand and watching the nurses "do God's work" while she and her husband stood by.

While extended family members were present to offer their support, the first wave of the Omicron variante of COVID-19 hit at that time, and as a precaution, only Jonas and Chopra were allowed to visit Malti.

"We spent every single day with her on my chest, on my husband's chest. I didn't know if she would make it or not," Chopra said.
